O God, why have you rejected us forever? Why does your anger smolder against the sheep of your pasture?
O God, why have you rejected us forever?
Psalm 43:2 You are God my stronghold. Why have you rejected me? Why must I go about mourning, oppressed by the enemy?
Psalm 44:23-24 Awake, Lord! Why do you sleep? Rouse yourself! Do not reject us forever. Why do you hide your face and forget our misery and oppression?
Why does your anger smolder against the sheep of your pasture?
Psalm 79:13 Then we your people, the sheep of your pasture, will praise you forever; from generation to generation we will proclaim your praise.
Psalm 95:6-7a Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the LORD our Maker; for he is our God and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care.
Psalm 100:3 Know that the LORD is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.

Psalm 73:27-28

Psalm 73:25-26
Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
Whom have I in heaven but you?
Psalm 16:2 I say to the LORD, "You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing."
And earth has nothing I desire besides you
Philippians 3:7-9 But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ--the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith.
My flesh and my heart
Psalm 84:2 My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the LORD; my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God.
may fail
Psalm 31:10 My life is consumed by anguish and my years by groaning; my strength fails because of my affliction and my bones grow weak.
Psalm 40:12 For troubles without number surround me, my sins have overtaken me, and I cannot see.
but God is the strength of my heart
Psalm 18:1 I love you, LORD, my strength.
and my portion forever
Deuteronomy 32:9 For the LORD's portion is his people, Jacob his allotted inheritance.
Psalm 16:5 LORD, you alone are my portion and my cup; you make my lot secure.
Psalm 119:57 You are my portion, LORD; I have promised to obey your words.
Psalm 142:5 I cry to you, LORD; I say, "You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living."
Jeremiah 10:16 He who is the portion of Jacob is not like these, for he is the Maker of all things, including Israel, the people of his inheritance--the LORD Almighty is his name.

Psalm 73:21-22
When my heart was grieved and my spirit embittered, I was senseless and ignorant; I was a brute beast before you.
I was senseless and ignorant
Psalm 49:10 For all can see that the wise die, that the foolish and the senseless also perish, leaving their wealth to others.
Psalm 92:6-7 Senseless people do not know, fools do not understand, that though the wicked spring up like grass and all evildoers flourish, they will be destroyed forever.
Psalm 94:8 Take notice, you senseless ones among the people; you fools, when will you become wise?
I was a brute beast before you
Psalm 49:12 People, despite their wealth, do not endure; they are like the beasts that perish.
Psalm 49:20 People who have wealth but lack understanding are like the beasts that perish.
Ecclesiastes 3:18-19 I also said to myself, "As for humans, God tests them so that they may see that they are like the animals. Surely the fate of human beings is like that of the animals; the same fate awaits them both: As one dies so dies the other. All have the same breath; humans have no advantage over animals. Everything is meaningless."
Ecclesiastes 9:12 Moreover, no one knows when their hour will come: As fish are caught in a cruel net, or birds taken up in a snare, so people are trapped by evil times that fall unexpectedly upon them.
Job 18:3 "Why are we regarded as cattle and considered stupid in your (Job's) sight?"

Psalm 73:18-20
Surely you place them on slippery ground; you cast them down to ruin. How suddenly are they destroyed, completely swept away by terrors! They are like a dream when one awakes; when you arise, Lord, you will despise them as fantasies.
Surely you place them on slippery ground
Deuteronomy 32:35 "It is mine to avenge; I will repay. In due time their foot will slip; their day of disaster is near and their doom rushes upon them."
Psalm 35:6 ... may their path be dark and slippery, with the angel of the LORD pursuing them.
you cast them down to ruin
Psalm 17:13 Rise up, LORD, confront them, bring them down; with your sword rescue me from the wicked.
How suddenly they are destroyed
Deuteronomy 28:20 The LORD will send on you curses, confusion and rebuke in everything you put your hand to, until you are destroyed and come to sudden ruin because of the evil you have done in forsaking him.
Proverbs 24:22 ... for those two (the LORD and the king) will send sudden destruction on them (rebellious officials), and who knows what calamities they can bring?
Isaiah 47:11 "Disaster will come upon you (Babylon), and you will not know how to conjure it away. a calamity will fall upon you that you cannot ward off with a ransom; a catastrophe you cannot foresee will suddenly come upon you."
completely swept away by terrors!
Genesis 19:15 With the coming of dawn, the angels urged Lot, saying, "Hurry! Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or you will be swept away when the city is punished."
They are like a dream
Job 20:8 "Like a dream he (the wicked) flies away, no more to be found, banished like a vision of the night."
when one awakes
Psalm 78:65 Then the Lord awoke as from sleep, as a warrior wakes from the stupor of wine.
Isaiah 29:8 ... as when a hungry person dreams of eating, but awakens hungry still; as when a thirsty person dreams of drinking, but awakens faint and thirsty still. So will it be with the hordes of all the nations that fight against Mount Zion.
when you arise, Lord, you will despise them as fantasies
Proverbs 12:11 Those who work their land will have abundant food, but those who chase fantasies have no sense.
Proverbs 28:19 Those who work their land will have abundant food, but those who chase fantasies will have their fill of poverty.

Psalm 73:15-17
If I had spoken out like that, I would have betrayed your children. When I tried to understand all this, it troubled me deeply till I entered the sanctuary of God; then I understood their final destiny.
When I tried to understand all this
Ecclesiastes 8:16-17 When I applied my mind to know wisdom and to observe the labor that is done on earth--people getting no sleep day or night--then I saw all that God has done. No one can comprehend what goes on under the sun. Despite all their efforts to search it out, no one can discover its meaning. Even if the wise claim they know, they cannot really comprehend it.
till I entered the sanctuary of God
Exodus 15:17-18 "You will bring them in and plant them on the mountain of your inheritance--the place, LORD, you made for your dwelling, the sanctuary, Lord, your hands established. The LORD reigns for ever and ever."
Psalm 15:1 LORD, who may dwell in your sacred tent? Who may live on your holy mountain?
then I understood their final destiny
Job 8:13 "Such is the destiny of all who forget God; so perishes the hope of the godless."
Philippians 3:18-19 For, as I have often told you before and now tell you again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is set on earthly things.

Psalm 73:13-14
Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure and have washed my hands in innocence. All day long I have been afflicted, and every morning brings new punishments.
Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure
Job 9:29-31 "Since I am already found guilty, why should I struggle in vain? Even if I washed myself with soap and my hands with cleansing powder, you would plunge me into a slime pit so that even my clothes would detest me."
Job 21:13-16 "They (the wicked) spend their years in prosperity and go down to the grave in peace. Yet they say to God, 'Leave us alone! We have no desire to know your ways. Who is the Almighty, that we should serve him? What would we gain by praying to him?' But their prosperity is not in their own hands, so I stand aloof from the plans of the wicked."
and have washed my hands in innocence
Genesis 44:16 "What can we say to my lord (Joseph)?" Judah replied. "What can we say? How can we prove our innocence? God has uncovered your servants' guilt. We are now my lord's slaves--we ourselves and the one who was found to have the cup."
Psalm 26:6 I wash my hands in innocence, and go about your altar, LORD.
All day long I have been afflicted
Psalm 73:5 They are free from common human burdens; they are not plagued by human ills.

Psalm 73:9-12
Their mouths lay claim to heaven, and their tongues take possession of the earth. Therefore their people turn to them and drink up waters in abundance. They say, "How would God know? Does the Most High know anything?" This is what the wicked are like--always free of care they go on amassing wealth.
Psalm 73:5 They are free from common human burdens; they are not plagued by human ills.
Psalm 49:5-6 Why should I fear when evil days come, when wicked deceivers surround me--those who trust in their wealth and boast of their great riches?
Psalm 52:1-7 Why do you boast of evil, you mighty hero? Why do you boast all day long, you who are a disgrace in the eyes of God? You who practice deceit, your tongue plots destruction; it is like a sharpened razor. You love evil rather than good, falsehood rather than speaking the truth. You love every harmful word, you deceitful tongue! Surely God will bring you down to everlasting ruin: He will snatch you up and pluck you from your tent; he will uproot you from the land of the living. The righteous will see and fear; they will laugh at you, saying, "Here now is the man who did not make God his stronghold but trusted in his great wealth and grew strong by destroying others!"

Psalm 73:7-8
From their callous hearts comes iniquity; their evil imaginations have no limits. They scoff, and speak with malice; with arrogance they threaten oppression.
From their callous hearts comes iniquity
Psalm 17:10 They close up their callous hearts, and their mouths speak with arrogance.
They scoff, and speak with malice
Psalm 41:5 My enemies say of me in malice, "When will he die and his name perish?"
Ezekiel 25:15-17 "This is what the Sovereign LORD says: 'Because the Philistines acted in vengeance and took revenge with malice in their hearts, and with ancient hostility sought to destroy Judah, therefore this is what the Sovereign LORD says: I am about to stretch out my hand against the Philistines, and I will wipe out the Kerethites and destroy those remaining along the coast. I will carry out great vengeance on them and punish them in my wrath. Then they will know that I am the LORD, when I take vengeance on them.' "
Colossians 3:8 But now you also must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips.
with arrogance

Psalm 73:4-6
They have no struggles; their bodies are healthy and strong. They are free from common human burdens; they are not plagued by human ills. Therefore pride is their necklace; they clothe themselves with violence.
They are free from common human burdens

Therefore pride
Leviticus 26:19 " 'I will break down your stubborn pride and make the sky above you like iron and the ground beneath you like bronze.' "
is their necklace
Genesis 41:42 Then Pharaoh took his signet ring from his finger and put it on Joseph's finger. He dressed him in robes of fine linen and put a gold chain around his neck.
Song of Songs 4:9 " 'I adorned you with jewelry: I put bracelets on your arms and a necklace around your neck, and I put a ring on your nose, earrings on your ears and a beautiful crown on your head.' "
they clothe themselves with violence
Genesis 6:11 Now the earth was corrupt in God's sight and was full of violence.
Proverbs 4:17 They eat the bread of wickedness and drink the wine of violence.

Psalm 73:2-3
But as for me, my feet had almost slipped; I had nearly lost my foothold. For I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.
But as for me, my feet had almost slipped
Deuteronomy 32:35 "It is mine to avenge; I will repay. In due time their foot will slip; their day of disaster is near and their doom rushes upon them."
I had nearly lost my foothold
Psalm 69:2 I sink in the miry depths, where there is no foothold. I have come into the deep waters; the floods engulf me.

Proverbs 23:17 Do not let your heart envy sinners, but always be zealous for the fear of the LORD.
Proverbs 24:1-2 Do not envy the wicked, do not desire their company; for their hearts plot violence, and their lips talk about making trouble.
when I saw the prosperity of the wicked
Job 9:24 "When a land falls into the hands of the wicked, he (God) blindfolds its judges. If it is not he, then who is it?"
Job 21:7 "Why do the wicked live on, growing old and increasing in power?"
Jeremiah 12:1 You are always righteous, LORD, when I bring a case before you. Yet I would speak with you about your justice. Why does the way of the wicked prosper? Why do all the faithless live at ease?

Psalm 73:1
Surely God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart.
Psalm 24:3-4 Who may ascend the mountain of the LORD? Who may stand in his holy place? The one who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not trust in an idol or swear by a false god.
Psalm 51:10-12 Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.
Matthew 5:8 "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God."
Acts 15:7-9 After much discussion, Peter got up and addressed them (the apostles and elders): "Brothers, you know that some time ago God made a choice among you that the Gentiles might hear from my lips the message of the gospel and believe. God, who knows the heart, showed that he accepted them by giving the Holy Spirit to them, just as he did to us. He did not discriminate between us and them, for he purified their hearts by faith."

Psalm 71:18
Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, my God, till I declare your power to the next generation, your mighty acts to all who are to come.
Even when I am old and gray
Isaiah 46:4 "Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you."
do not forsake me, my God, till I declare your power to the next generation
Exodus 9:15-18 "For by now I could have stretched out my hand and struck you (Pharaoh) and your people with a plague that would have wiped you off the earth. But I have raised you up for this very purpose, that I might show you my power and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth. You still set yourself against my people and will not let them go. Therefore, at this time tomorrow I will send the worst hailstorm that has ever fallen on Egypt, from the day it was founded till now."
your mighty acts to all who are to come
Job 8:8-9 "Ask the former generation and find out what their ancestors learned, for we were born only yesterday and know nothing, and our days on earth are but a shadow."
Psalm 22:30-31 Posterity will serve him; future generations will be told about the Lord. They will proclaim his righteousness, declaring to a people yet unborn: He has done it!
Psalm 78:4 We will not hide them from their descendants; we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the LORD, his power and the wonders he has done.
Psalm 145:4-5 One generation commends your works to another; they tell of your mighty acts. They speak of the glorious splendor of your majesty--and I will meditate on your wonderful works.
Joel 1:2-3 Hear this, you elders; listen, all who live in the land. Has anything like this ever happened in your days or in the days of your ancestors? Tell it to your children, and their children to the next generation.

Psalm 71:17
Since my youth, God, you have taught me, and to this day I declare your marvelous deeds.
Since my youth, God, you have taught me
Deuteronomy 4:5-8 See, I have taught you decrees and laws as the LORD my God commanded me, so that you may follow them in the land you are entering to take possession of it. Observe them carefully, for this will show your wisdom and understanding to the nations, who will hear about all these decrees and say, "Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people." What other nation is so great as to have their gods near them in the way the LORD our God is near us whenever we pray to him? And what other nation is so great as to have such righteous decrees and laws as this body of laws I am setting before you today?
Jeremiah 7:12-13 " 'Go now to the place in Shiloh where I first made a dwelling for my Name, and see what I did to it because of the wickedness of my people Israel. While you were doing all these things, declares the LORD, I spoke to you again and again, but you did not listen; I called you but you did not answer.' "
and to this day I declare your marvelous deeds
Job 5:9 "He performs wonders that cannot be fathomed, miracles that cannot be counted."
Psalm 26:6-7 I wash my hands in innocence, and go about your altar, LORD, proclaiming aloud your praise and telling of all your wonderful deeds.
Psalm 86:10 For you are great and do marvelous deeds; you alone are God.
Psalm 96:3 Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples.

As for me, I will always have hope
Psalm 25:3 No one who hopes in you will ever be put to shame, but shame will come on those who are treacherous without cause.
