John 19:7-11 Part 1 of 2

The Jewish leaders insisted, "We have a law, and according to that law he must die, because he claimed to be the Son of God." When Pilate heard this, he was even more afraid, and he went back inside the palace. "Where do you come from?" he asked Jesus, but Jesus gave him no answer. "Do you refuse to speak to me?" Pilate said. "Don't you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?" Jesus answered, "You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin."

We have a law, and according to that law he must die
Leviticus 24:15-16  "Say to the Israelites: 'Anyone who curses their God will be held responsible; anyone who blasphemes the name of the LORD is to be put to death. The entire assembly must stone them. Whether foreigner or native-born, when they blaspheme the Name they are to be put to death.' "

because he claimed to be the Son of God
Matthew 26:63-66  But Jesus remained silent. The high priest said to him, "I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God."  "You have said so," Jesus replied. "But I say to all of you: From now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven." Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, "He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?"  "He is worthy of death," they answered.
John 5:18  For this reason they tried all the more to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.
John 10:33  "We are not stoning you for any good work," they replied, "but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God."

When Pilate heard this, he was even more afraid, and he went back inside the palace
John 18:33  Pilate then went back inside the palace, summoned Jesus and asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?"

"Where do you come from?" he asked Jesus, but Jesus gave him no answer
Mark 14:61  But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer. Again the high priest asked him, "Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?"

John 19:4-6

Once more Pilate came out and said to the Jews gathered there, "Look, I am bringing him out to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against him." When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe, Pilate said to them, "Here is the man!" As soon as the chief priests and their officials saw him, they shouted, "Crucify! Crucify!" But Pilate answered, "You take him and crucify him. As for me, I find no basis for a charge against him."

Look, I am bringing him out to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against him
John 18:38  "What is truth?" retorted Pilate. With this he went out again to the Jews gathered there and said, "I find no basis for a charge against him."
Luke 23:4  Then Pilate announced to the chief priests and the crowd, "I find no basis for a charge against this man."
Luke 23:14  ... "You brought me this man as one who was inciting the people to rebellion. I have examined him in your presence and have found no basis for your charges against him."

When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe
John 19:2  The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe ...

You take him and crucify him
Acts 3:13  "The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified his servant Jesus. You handed him over to be killed, and you disowned him before Pilate, though he had decided to let him go."

As for me, I find no basis for a charge against him
Luke 23:22  For the third time he spoke to them: "Why? What crime has this man committed? I have found in him no grounds for the death penalty. Therefore I will have him punished and then release him."

Luke 22:63-65  (At the high priest's palace) The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him. They blindfolded him and demanded, "Prophesy! Who hit you?" and they said many other insulting things to him.
John 18:22  (At the high priest's palace) When Jesus said this, one of the officials nearby slapped him in the face. "Is this the way you answer the high priest?" he demanded.

John 19:1-3 Part 1 of 2

Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged. The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe and went up to him again and again, saying, "Hail, king of the Jews!" And they slapped him in the face.

Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged

John 18:37-40 Part 2 of 2

"You are a king, then!" said Pilate. Jesus answered, "You say that I am a king. In fact the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me."  "What is truth?" retorted Pilate. With this he went out again to the Jews gathered there and said, "I find no basis for a charge against him. But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. Do you want me to release 'the king of the Jews'?" They shouted back, "No, not him! Give us Barabbas!" Now Barabbas had taken part in an uprising.

I find no basis for a charge against him

Luke 23:14  ... "You brought me this man as one who was inciting the people to rebellion. I have examined him in your presence and have found no basis for your charges against him."

Luke 23:40-41  But the criminal rebuked him. "Don't you fear God," he said, "since you are under the same sentence? We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong."
Matthew 27:23  "Why? What crime has he committed?" asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, "Crucify him!"

They shouted back, "No, not him! Give us Barabbas!"
Acts 3:14  "You disowned the Holy and Righteous One and asked that a murderer be released to you."
Mark 15:11  But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have Pilate release Barabbas instead.

the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth
John 3:31-33  The one who comes from above is above all; the one who is from the earth belongs to the earth, and speaks as one from the earth. The one who comes from heaven is above all. He testifies to what he has seen and heard, but no one accepts his testimony. Whoever has accepted it has certified that God is truthful.

Everyone on the side of truth listens to me
John 8:47  "Whoever belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God."
1 John 4:6  We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. This is how we recognize the Spirit of truth and the spirit of falsehood.

What is truth?
John 1:14  The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
John 1:17  For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
John 8:31-32  To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."
John 14:6  Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."

John 18:33-36 Part 2 of 2

Pilate then went back inside the palace, summoned Jesus and asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?"  "Is that your own idea," Jesus asked, "or did others talk to about me?"  "Am I a Jew?" Pilate replied. "Your own people and chief priests handed you over to me. What is it you have done?" Jesus said, "My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place."

My kingdom is not of this world
Matthew 3:1-2  In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea and saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near."
Daniel 7:14  "He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all nations and peoples of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed."
Matthew 4:17  From that time on Jesus began to preach, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near."
Matthew 6:9-10  "This, then, is how you should pray: 'Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.' "
Luke 11:20  "But if I drive out demons by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you."
Luke 21:31  "Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that the kingdom of God is near."

If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders
Matthew 26:53  "Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels?" (a legion had 6,000 soldiers)

But now my kingdom is from another place
Luke 17:20-21  Once, on being asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, Jesus answered, "The coming of the kingdom of God is not something that can be observed, nor will people say, 'Here it is,' or 'There it is,' because the kingdom of God is in your midst."

John 18:28-29  Then the Jewish leaders took Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor. By now it was early morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness they did not enter the palace, because they wanted to eat the Passover. So Pilate came out to them and asked, "What charges do you bring against this man?"
John 19:8-9  When Pilate heard this, he was even more afraid, and he went back inside the palace. "Where do you come from?" he asked Jesus, but Jesus gave him no answer.

Are you the king of the Jews?

Matthew 2:1-2  After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, "Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him."
Jeremiah 23:5  "The days are coming," declares the LORD, "when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, a King who will reign wisely and do what is just and right in the land."
Matthew 27:11  Meanwhile Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?"  "You have said so," Jesus replied. (see also Mark 15:2)

So Pilate came out to them and asked, "What charges are you bringing against this man?"  "If he were not a criminal," they replied, "we would not have handed him over to you." Pilate said, "Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law."  "But we have no right to execute anyone," they objected. This took place to fulfill what Jesus had said about the kind of death he was going to die.

This took place to fulfill what Jesus has said about the kind of death he was going to die
Matthew 20:17-19  Now Jesus was going up to Jerusalem. On the way he took the Twelve aside and said to them, "We are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death and hand him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified. On the third day he will be raised to life!"
Matthew 26:1-2  When Jesus had finished saying all these things, he said to his disciples, "As you know, the Passover is two days away--and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified."

John 18:25-27

Meanwhile, Simon Peter was still standing there warming himself. So they asked him, "You aren't one of his disciples too, are you?" He denied it, saying, "I am not." One of the high priest's servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, challenged him, "Didn't I see you with him in the garden?" Again Peter denied it, and at that moment a rooster began to crow.

Simon Peter was still standing there warming himself
John 18:18  It was cold, and the servants and officials stood around a fire they had made to keep warm. Peter also was standing with them, warming himself.

He denied it, saying, "I am not."

Didn't I see you in the garden?
John 18:1  When he had finished praying, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley. On the other side there was a garden, and he and his disciples went into it.

at that moment a rooster began to crow
John 13:38  Then Jesus answered, "Will you really lay down your life for me? Very truly I tell you, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times!"
Matthew 26:34  "Truly I tell you," Jesus answered, "this very night, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times."
Mark 14:30  "Truly I tell you," Jesus answered, "today--yes, tonight--before the rooster crows twice you yourself will disown me three times."

John 18:22-24

When Jesus said this, one of the officials nearby slapped him in the face. "Is this the way you answer the high priest?" he demanded. "If I said something wrong," Jesus replied, "testify as to what is wrong. But if I spoke the truth, why did you strike me?" Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.

when Jesus said this, one of the officials nearby
John 18:3  So Judas came to the garden, guiding a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and the Pharisees. They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons.

slapped him in the face
Matthew 16:21  From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.
John 19:2-3  The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe and went up to him again and again, saying, "Hail, king of the Jews!" And they slapped him in the face.

But if I spoke the truth, why did you strike me?
Matthew 5:39  "But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also."
Acts 23:2-5  At this the high priest Ananias ordered those standing near Paul to strike him on the mouth. Then Paul said to him, "God will strike you, you whitewashed wall! You sit there to judge me according to the law, yet you yourself violate the law by commanding that I be struck!" Those who were standing near Paul said, "How dare you insult God's high priest!" Paul replied, "Brothers, I did not realize that he was the high priest; for it is written: 'Do not speak evil about the ruler of your people.' " (Exodus 22:28)

Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest

John 18:19-21

Meanwhile, the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching. "I have spoken openly to the world," Jesus replied. "I always taught in synagogues or at the temple, where all the Jews come together. I said nothing in secret. Why question me? Ask those who heard me. Surely they know what I said."

I always taught in synagogues
Matthew 4:23  Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people.
Matthew 9:35  Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness.
Matthew 13:54  Coming to his hometown, he began teaching the people in their synagogue, and they were amazed. "Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers?" they asked.
Mark 1:21  They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach.
Luke 4:14-15  Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside. He was teaching the their synagogues, and everyone praised him.
John 6:59  He said this while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.

or at the temple
Matthew 26:55  In that hour Jesus said to the crowd, "Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? Every day I sat in the temple courts teaching, and you did not arrest me."
Mark 12:35  While Jesus was teaching in the temple courts, he asked, "Why do the teachers of the law say that the Messiah is the son of David?"
John 7:14  Not until halfway through the festival did Jesus go up to the temple courts and begin to teach.

I said nothing in secret
John 7:25-26  At that point some of the people of Jerusalem began to ask, "Isn't this the man they are trying to kill? Here he is, speaking publicly, and they are not saying a word to him. Have the authorities really concluded that he is the Messiah?"

John 18:15-18

Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Because this disciple was known to the high priest, he went with Jesus into the high priest's courtyard, but Peter had to wait outside at the door. The other disciple, who was known to the high priest, came back, spoke to the servant girl on duty there and brought Peter in. "You aren't one of this man's disciples too, are you?" she asked Peter. He replied, "I am not." It was cold, and the servants and officials stood around a fire they had made to keep warm. Peter also was standing with them, warming himself.

Because this disciple was known to the high priest

John 18:25-27   Meanwhile, Simon Peter was still standing there warming himself. So they asked him, "You aren't one of his disciples too, are you?" He denied it, saying, "I am not." Then one of them, named Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, spoke up, "You know nothing at all! You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish." He did not say this on his own, but as high priest that year he prophesied Jesus would die for the Jewish nation, and not only for that nation but also for the scattered children of God, to bring them together and make them one.
