Psalm 49:1-3

Hear this all you peoples; listen, all who live in this world, both low and high, rich and poor alike: My mouth will speak words of wisdom; the meditation of my heart will give you understanding.

Hear this 
Isaiah 1:2  Hear me, you heavens! Listen, earth! For the LORD has spoken: "I reared children and brought them up, but they have rebelled against me."

all you peoples 
Psalm 78:1 My people, hear my teaching; listen to the words of my mouth.

listen, all who live in this world 
Psalm 33:8  Let all the earth fear the LORD; let all the people of the world revere him.

both low and high 
Psalm 62:9  Surely the lowborn are but a breath, the highborn are but a lie. If weighed on a balance, they are nothing; together they are only a breath.

My mouth will speak words of wisdom 
Psalm 37:30  The mouths of the righteous utter wisdom, and their tongues speak what is just.

the meditation of my heart will give you understanding

Psalm 48:14

For this God is our God for ever and ever; he will be our guide even to the end.

Psalm 48:12-13

Walk about Zion, go around her, count her towers, consider well her ramparts, view her citadels, that you may tell of them to the next generation. 

Walk about Zion, go around her, count her towers 
Nehemiah 3:1  Eliashib the high priest and his fellow priests went to work and rebuilt the Sheep Gate. They dedicated it and set its doors in place, building as far as the Tower of the Hundred, which they dedicated, and as far at the Tower of Hananel.

consider well her ramparts 
2 Samuel 20:15-16  All the troops with Joab came and besieged Sheba in Abel Beth Maakah. They built a siege ramp up to the city, and it stood against the outer fortifications. While they were battering the wall to bring it down, a wise woman called from the city, "Listen! Listen! Tell Joab to come here so I can speak to him."
Isaiah 26:1  In that day this song will be sung in the Land of Judah: We have a strong city; God makes salvation its walls and ramparts.
Lamentations 2:8  The LORD determined to tear down the wall around Daughter Zion. He stretched out a measuring line and did not withhold his hand from destroying. He made ramparts and walls lament; together they wasted away.
Habakkuk 2:1  I will stand at my watch and station myself on the ramparts; I will look to see what he will say to me, and what answer I am to give to this complaint.

Psalm 71:18  Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, my God, till I declare your power to the next generation, your mighty acts to all who are to come.
Psalm 78:5-6  He decreed statutes for Jacob and established the law in Israel, which he commanded our ancestors to teach their children, so the next generation would know them, even the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children.
Psalm 109:13  May his descendants be cut off, their names blotted out from the next generation.

Psalm 48:10-11

Like your name, O God, your praise reaches to the ends of the earth; your right hand is filled with righteousness. Mount Zion rejoices, the villages of Judah are glad because of your judgments.

Exodus 6:3  "I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob as God Almighty, but by my name the LORD I did not make myself fully known to them."
Joshua 7:9  "The Canaanites and the other people of the country will hear about this and they will surround us and wipe out our name from the earth. What then will you do for your own great name?"

your praise reaches to the ends of the earth 
1 Samuel 2:10  "... those who oppose the LORD will be broken. The Most High will thunder from heaven; the LORD will judge the ends of the earth. He will give strength to his king and exalt the horn of his anointed."

Psalm 48:8-9

As we have heard, so we have seen in the city of the LORD Almighty, in the city of our God: God makes her secure forever. Within your temple, O God, we meditate on your unfailing love.

God makes her secure forever 
Jeremiah 23:5-6  "The days are coming," declares the LORD, "when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, a King who will reign wisely and do what is just and right in the land. In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety. This is the name by which he will be called: The LORD Our Righteous Savior."
Zechariah 8:13  "Just as you, Judah and Israel, have been a curse among the nations, so I will save you, and you will be a blessing. Do not be afraid, but let your hands be strong."
Zechariah 14:10-11  The whole land, from Geba to Rimmon, south of Jerusalem, will become like the Arabah. But Jerusalem will be raised up high from the Benjamin Gate to the site of the First Gate, to the Corner Gate, and from the Tower of Hananel to the royal winepresses, and will remain in its place. It will be inhabited; never again will it be destroyed. Jerusalem will be secure.

Within your temple, O God, we meditate 
Psalm 1:1-2  Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the LORD, and who meditates on his law day and night.

Psalm 48:6-7

Trembling seized them there, pain like that of a woman in labor. You destroyed them like ships of Tarshish shattered by an east wind.

Trembling seized them there 
Job 4:13-14  "Amid disquieting dreams in the night, when sleep falls on people, fear and trembling seized me and made all my bones shake."
Jeremiah 5:22  "Should you not fear me?" declares the LORD. "Should you not tremble in my presence? I made the sand a boundary for the sea, an everlasting barrier it cannot cross. The waves may roll, but they cannot prevail; they may roar, but they cannot cross it."
Habakkuk 3:16  I heard and my heart pounded, my lips quivered at the sound; decay crept into my bones, and my legs trembled. Yet I will wait patiently for the day of calamity to come on the nation invading us.

pain like that of a woman in labor 
Genesis 3:16  To the woman he said, "I will make your pains in childbearing very severe; with painful labor you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you."

You destroyed them like ships of Tarshish 
Isaiah 23:1  A prophecy against Tyre: Wail, you ships of Tarshish! For Tyre is destroyed and left without house or harbor. From the land of Cyprus word has come to them.
1 Kings 10:22  The king had a fleet of trading ships at sea along with the ships of Hiram. Once every three years it returned, carrying gold, silver and ivory, and apes and baboons.
1 Kings 22:48  Now Jehoshaphat built a fleet of trading ships to go to Ophir for gold, but they never set sail--they were wrecked at Ezion Geber.

shattered by an east wind 
Isaiah 27:8  By warfare and exile you contend with her--with his fierce blast he drives her out, as on a day the east wind blows.
Jeremiah 18:17  "Like a wind from the east, I will scatter them before their enemies; I will show them my back and not my face in the day of their disaster."

Psalm 48:4-5

When the kings joined forces, when they advanced together, they saw her and were astounded; they fled in terror.

2 Samuel 10:6  When the Ammonites realized that they had become obnoxious to David (see verses 10:1-5), they hired twenty thousand Aramean foot soldiers from Beth Rehob and Zobah, as well as the king of Maacah with a thousand men from Tob.
2 Samuel 10:15-16  After the Arameans saw that they had been routed by Israel, they regrouped. Hadadezer had Arameans brought from beyond the Euphrates River; they went to Helam, with Shobak the commander of Hadadezer's army leading them. (see verses 6-19)

they saw her and were astounded, they fled in terror 
Exodus 15:16  "... terror and dread will fall on them. By the power of your arm they will be as still as stone--until your people pass by, LORD, until the people you bought pass by."
2 Samuel 10:19  When all the kings who were vassals of Hadadezer saw that they had been routed by Israel. they made peace with the Israelites and became subject to them.
Isaiah 13:8  Terror will seize them, pain and anguish will grip them; they will writhe like a woman in labor. They will look aghast at each other, their faces aflame.
Jeremiah 46:5  "What do I see? They are terrified, they are retreating, their warriors are defeated. They flee in haste without looking back, and there is terror on every side," declared the LORD.

Daniel 5:8-9  Then all the king's wise men came in, but they could not read the writing or tell the king what it meant. So King Belshazzar became even more terrified and his face grew more pale. His nobles were baffled.

Psalm 48:2-3

Beautiful in its loftiness, the joy of the whole earth, like the heights of Zaphon is Mount Zion, the city of the Great King. God is in her citadels; he has shown himself to be her fortress.

Matthew 5:34-35  "But I tell you, do not swear an oath at all: ether by heaven, for it is God's throne; or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King."  

God is in her citadels

Psalm 47:5-6

God has ascended amid shouts of joy, the LORD amid the sounding of trumpets. Sing praises to God, sing praises; sing praises to our King, sing praises.

God has ascended 
Psalm 68:18  When you ascended on high, you took many captives; you received gifts from people, even from the rebellious--that you, LORD God, might dwell there.
Ephesians 4:7-8  But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it. This is why it says: "When he ascended on high, he took many captives and gave gifts to his people." (Psalm 68:18)

amid shouts of joy 
Job 8:21  "He will yet fill your mouth with laughter and your lips with shouts of joy."

2 Samuel 6:14-15  Wearing a linen ephod, David was dancing before the LORD with all his might, while he and all Israel were bringing up the ark of the LORD with shouts and the sound of trumpets.

Psalm 47:3-4

He subdued nations under us, peoples under our feet. He chose our inheritance for us, the pride of Jacob, whom he loved.

He subdued nations under us 
Psalm 18:39  You armed me with strength for battle; you humbled my adversaries before me.
Psalm 18:47  He is the God who avenges me, who subdues nations under me.
Isaiah 14:5-6  The LORD has broken the rod of the wicked, the scepter of the rulers, which in anger struck down peoples with unceasing blows, and in fury subdued nations with relentless aggression.

He chose our inheritance for us 
Psalm 2:8  "Ask me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession."
Psalm 16:6  The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance.
Psalm 78:55  He drove out nations before them and allotted their lands to them as an inheritance; he settled the tribes of Israel in their homes.
1 Peter 1:3-5  Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God's power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.

the pride of Jacob, whom he loved

Psalm 47:2

For the LORD Most High is awesome, the great King over all the earth.

For the LORD Most High 
Genesis 14:18-20  Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. He was priest of God Most High, and he blessed Abram, saying, "Blessed be Abram by God Most High, who delivered your enemies into your hand." Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything.

Deuteronomy 7:21  Do not be terrified by them, for the LORD your God, who is among you, is a great and awesome God.

Psalm 47:1

Clap your hands, all you nations; shout to God with cries of joy. 

Clap your hands, all you nations 
2 Kings 11:12  Jehoiada brought out the king's son and put the crown on him; he presented him with a copy of the covenant and proclaimed him king. They anointed him, and the people clapped their hands and shouted, "Long live the king!"
Psalm 98:8-9  Let the rivers clap their hands, let the mountains sing together for joy; let them sing before the LORD, for he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world in righteousness and the peoples with equity.

Psalm 46:10-11

He says, "Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth." The LORD Almighty is with us, the God of Jacob is our fortress.

"Be still and know that I am God" 
Deuteronomy 4:35  You were shown these things so that you might know that the LORD is God; besides him there is no other.
1 Kings 18:36  At the time of sacrifice, the prophet Elijah stepped forward and prayed: "LORD, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, let it be known today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and have done all these things at your command."

Psalm 46:9

He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth. He breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the shields with fire.

He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth 
Isaiah 2:4  He will judge between the nations and settle disputes for many peoples. They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore.

He breaks the bow and shatters the spear 
Psalm 37:15  But their swords will pierce their own hearts, and their bows will be broken.
Isaiah 22:5-7  The Lord, the LORD Almighty has a day of tumult and trampling and terror in the Valley of Vision, a day of battering down walls and of crying out to the mountains. Elam takes up the quiver with her charioteers and horses; Kir uncovers the shield. Your choicest valleys are full of chariots, and horsemen are posted at the city gates.

he burns the shields with fire

Psalm 46:7-8

The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Come and see what the LORD has done, the desolations he has brought on the earth.

The LORD Almighty 
1 Samuel 1:11  And she made a vow, saying, "LORD Almighty, if you will only look on your servant's misery and remember me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the LORD for all the days of his life and no razor will ever be used on his head."

is with us 
Genesis 21:22-24  At that time Abimelek and Phicol the commander of his forces said to Abraham, "God is with you in everything you do. Now swear to me here before God that you will not deal falsely with me or my children or my descendants. the desolations he has brought on the earth

kingdoms fall 
Ezekiel 26:17-18  "Then they will take up a lament concerning you (Tyre) and say to you: 'How you are destroyed, city of renown, peopled by men of the sea! You were a power on the seas, you and your citizens; you put your terror on all who lived there. Now the coastlands tremble on the day of your fall; the islands in the sea are terrified at your collapse.' "

Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall, he lifts his voice, the earth melts.

Nations 
Job 12:23-25  "He makes the nations great, and destroys them; he enlarges nations and disperses them. He deprives the leaders of the earth of their reason; he makes them wander in a trackless waste. They grope in darkness with no light; he makes them stagger like drunkards."

are in uproar 
Psalm 74:23  Do not ignore the clamor of your adversaries, the uproar of your enemies, which rises continually.
Isaiah 5:30  In that day they will roar over it like the roaring of the sea. And if one looks at the land, there is only darkness and distress; even the sun will be darkened by clouds.
Isaiah 17:12  Woe to the many nations that rage--they rage like the raging sea! Woe to the peoples who roar--they roar like the roaring of great waters!

kingdoms fall
Psalm 68:32-34  Sing to God, you kingdoms of the earth, sing praises to the LORD, to him who rides across the highest heavens, the ancient heavens, who thunders with mighty voice.
Psalm 102:21-22  So the name of the LORD will be declared in Zion and his praise in Jerusalem when the peoples and the kingdoms assemble to worship the LORD.

Psalm 46:5

God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day.

God is within her 
Deuteronomy 23:14  For the LORD your God moves about in your camp to protect you and to deliver your enemies to you. Your camp must be holy, so that he will not see among you anything indecent and turn away from you.
Psalm 26:8  LORD, I love the house where you live, the place where your glory dwells.
Isaiah 12:6  "Shout aloud and sing for joy, people of Zion, for great is the Holy One of Israel among you."
Zechariah 2:5  " 'And I, myself will be a wall of fire around it (Jerusalem),' declares the LORD, 'and I will be its glory within.' "

she will not fall 
Psalm 125:1  Those who trust in the LORD are like Mount Zion, which cannot be shaken but endures forever.

God will help her at break of day 
1 Chronicles 5:20  They were helped in fighting them, and God delivered the Hagrites and all their allies into their hands, because they cried out to him during the battle. He answered their prayers, because they trusted in him.

Psalm 46:4

There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells. 

There is a river 
Genesis 2:10  A river watering the garden flowed from Eden; from there it was separated into four headwaters.
Revelation 22:1-2  Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.

whose streams 
Psalm 1:3  That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither--whatever they do prospers.

make glad the city of God 
Psalm 48:1  Great is the LORD, and most worthy of praise, in the city of our God, his holy mountain.

God is our refuge 
Psalm 9:9  The LORD is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble.
Psalm 37:39  The salvation of the righteous comes from the LORD; he is their stronghold in time of trouble.
Psalm 61:3  For you have been my refuge, a strong tower against the foe.
Psalm 73:26  My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
Psalm 91:2  I will say of the LORD, "He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust."
Psalm 91:9-10  If you say, "The LORD is my refuge," and you make the Most High your dwelling, no harm will overtake you, no disaster will come near your tent.
Psalm 142:5  I cry to you, LORD; I say, "You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living."
Isaiah 33:15-16  Those who walk righteously and speak what is right, who reject gain from extortion and keep their hands from accepting bribes, who stop their ears against plots of murder and shut their eyes against contemplating evil--they are the ones who will dwell on the heights, whose refuge will be the mountain fortress. Their bread will be supplied, and water will not fail them. 
Jeremiah 16:19  LORD, my strength and my fortress, my refuge in time of distress, to you the nations will come from the ends of the earth and say, "Our ancestors possessed nothing but false gods, worthless idols that did them no good."
