John 17:3 Part 2 of 2

"Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent."

and Jesus Christ
Ephesians 4:13  ... until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.
Philippians 3:8-11  What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ--the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith. I want to know Christ--yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead.

whom you have sent
John 17:8  "For I gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me."
John 17:18  "As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world."
John 17:20-21  "My prayer is not  for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me."
John 3:17  For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

John 17:3 Part 1 of 2

"Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent."

Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God
Psalm 36:10  Continue your love to those who know you, your righteousness to the upright in heart.
Jeremiah 9:23-24  This is what the LORD says: "Let not the wise boast of their wisdom or the strong boast of their strength or the rich boast of their riches, but let the one who boasts boast about this: that they have the understanding to know me, that I am the LORD, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight," declares the LORD.
Jeremiah 22:15-16  "Does it make you (Shallum/Jehoahaz) a king to have more and more cedar? Did not your father (Josiah) have food and drink? He did what was right and just, so all went well with him. He defended the cause of the poor and needy, and so all went well. Is that not what it means to know me?" declares the LORD.
2 Peter 1:2  Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.
Psalm 46:10  He says, "Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth."
Psalm 100:3  Know that the LORD is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.
Jeremiah 24:7  " 'I will give them a heart to know me, that I am the LORD. They will be my people, and I will be their God, for they will return to me with all their heart.' "
1 Corinthians 1:21  For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe.
1 John 5:20  We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true by being in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.

John 17:20-21  "My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me."
John 17:24  "Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world."
John 6:37-40  "All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. For my Father's will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day."

John 17:2 Part 2 of 3

"For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him."

that he might give eternal life
Matthew 25:46  "Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life."
John 3:16  For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
John 3:36  Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God's wrath remains on them.
John 17:3  "Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent."
Romans 2:7-8  To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life. But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger.

1 John 1:2  The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us.
1 John 5:11-13  And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.
1 John 5:20  We know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true by being in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.

John 17:2 Part 1 of 3

"For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him."

For you have granted him authority over all people
Matthew 28:18  Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me."
Daniel 7:13-14  "In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all nations and peoples of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed."
Luke 10:22  "All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and no one knows who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him."
John 3:35  The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in his hands.
1 Corinthians 15:27  For he "has put everything under his feet." (Psalm 8:6) Now when it says that "everything" has been put under him, it is clear that this does not include God himself, who put everything under Christ.
Ephesians 1:19b-22  That power is the same as the mighty strength he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, ...
Philippians 2:9-11  Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

John 17:1

After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed: "Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son that your Son may glorify you."

After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed
John 11:41  So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said, "Father, I thank you that you have heard me."

Father, the hour has come
Matthew 26:18  He replied, "Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, 'The Teacher says: My appointed time is near. I am going to celebrate the Passover with my disciples at your house.' "
Mark 14:35  Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour might pass from him.
Mark 14:41  Returning the third time, he said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners."
John 7:6  Therefore Jesus told them, "My time is not yet here; for you any time will do."
John 7:8  "You go to the festival. I am not going up to this festival, because my time has not yet fully come."
John 7:30  At this they tried to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come.
John 8:20  He spoke these words while teaching in the temple courts near the place where the offerings were put. Yet no one seized him, because his hour had not yet come.
John 13:1  It was just before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.

Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you
John 12:23  Jesus replied, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified."
John 13:31-32  When he (Judas Iscariot) was gone, Jesus said, "Now the Son of Man is glorified and God is glorified in him. If God is glorified in him, God will glorify the Son in himself, and will glorify him at once."

John 16:33 Part 2 of 2

"I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."

But take heart! I have overcome the world
Romans 8:37  No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.
1 John 4:4  You dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.
1 John 5:3-4  In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.
Revelation 2:7  "Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God."
Revelation 2:11  "Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. The one who is victorious will not be hurt at all by the second death."
Revelation 2:17  "Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious, I will give some of the hidden manna. I will also give that person a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to the one who receives it."
Revelation 2:26-28  "To the one who is victorious and does my will to the end, I will give authority over the nations--that one will rule them with an iron scepter and 'will dash them to pieces like pottery' (Psalm 2:9)--just as I have received authority from my Father. I will also give that one the morning star."
Revelation 3:5-6  "The one who is victorious will, like them, be dressed in white. I will never blot out the name of that person from the book of life, but will acknowledge that name before my Father and his angels."
Revelation 3:12  "The one who is victorious I will make a pillar in the temple of my God. Never again will they leave it. I will write on them the name of my God and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which is coming down out of heaven from my God; and I will also write on them my new name."
Revelation 3:21  "To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I was victorious and sat down with my Father on his throne."
Revelation 21:7  "Those who are victorious will inherit all this, and I will be their God and they will be my children."

John 16:33 Part 1 of 2

"I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."

I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace
John 14:27  "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid."
Numbers 6:26  " ' "... the LORD turn his face toward you and give you peace." ' "
Psalm 85:8  I will listen to what God the LORD says; he promises peace to his people, his faithful servants--but let them not turn to folly.
Luke 24:36  While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, "Peace be with you."
Philippians 4:6-7  Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Colossians 3:15  Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.

In this world you will have trouble
John 15:18-21  "If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you. Remember what I told you: 'A servant is not greater than his master.' If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also. They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the one who sent me."

John 16:29-32

"Then Jesus' disciples said, "Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech. Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God."   "Do you now believe?" Jesus replied. "A time is coming and in fact has come when you will be scattered, each to his own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me."

Now you are speaking clearly without figures of speech
John 16:25  "Though I have been speaking figuratively, a time is coming when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father."

This makes us believe
1 Kings 17:24  Then the woman said to Elijah, "Now I know that you are a man of God and that the word of the LORD from your mouth is the truth."

that you came from God
John 16:27  "No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God."
John 13:3  Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; ...

A time is coming
John 16:2  "They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God."

and in fact has come, when you will be scattered
Matthew 26:31  Then Jesus told them, "This very night you will all fall away on account of me, for it is written: 'I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.' " (Zechariah 13:7)

You will leave me all alone
Matthew 26:25-26  In that hour Jesus said to the crowd, "Am I leading a rebellion that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? Every day I sat in the temple courts teaching, and you did not arrest me. But this has all taken place that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled." Then all the disciples deserted him and fled.

Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me
John 8:16  "But if I do judge, my decisions are true, because I am not alone. I stand with my Father who sent me."
John 8:29  "The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what pleases him."

John 16:27-28

"No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father."

No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me
John 14:21  "Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them."
John 14:23  Jesus replied, "Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them."

and have believed that I came from God
John 16:30  "Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God."
John 13:3  Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; ...
John 8:42  Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me, for I have come here from God. I have not come on my own; God sent me."

now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father
John 16:5  "... but now I am going to him who sent me. None of you asks me, 'Where are you going?' "
John 7:33  Jesus said, "I am with you for only a short time, and then I am going to the one who sent me."

John 16:25-26

"Though I have been speaking figuratively, a time is coming when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father. In that day you will ask in my name. I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf."

Though I have been speaking figuratively
John 16:29-30  Then Jesus' disciples said, "Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech. Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God."
Psalm 78:2  I will open my mouth with a parable; I will utter hidden things, things from of old--...
Ezekiel 20:49  Then I said, "Sovereign LORD, they are saying of me, 'Isn't he just telling parables?' "
Matthew 13:34-35  Jesus spoke all these things to the crowd in parables; he did not say anything to them without using a parable. So it was fulfilled what was spoken through the prophet: "I will open my mouth in parables, I will utter things hidden since the creation of the world." (Psalm 78:2)
Mark 4:33-34  With many similar parables Jesus spoke the word to them, as much as they could understand. He did not say anything to them without using a parable. But when he was alone with his own disciples, he explained everything.
John 10:6  Jesus used this figure of speech, but the Pharisees did not understand what he was telling them.

In that day you will ask in my name
John 16:23-24  "In that day you will no longer ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete."

John 16:23-24

"In that day you will no longer ask me for anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete."

In that day you will no longer ask me for anything
John 16:26  "In that day you will ask in my name. I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf."
John 14:20  "On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you."

my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name
Matthew 7:7-8  "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks the door will be opened."
John 14:13-14  "And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it."
John 15:16  "You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit--fruit that will last--and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you."

Ask and you will receive
John 15:7  "If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you."
1 John 3:21-22  Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God and receive from him anything we ask, because we keep his commands and do what pleases him.

and your joy will be complete

John 16:19-22

Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, "Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, 'In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me'? Very truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy. A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy."

you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices
Mark 16:10  She (Mary Magdalene) went and told those who had been with him and who were mourning and weeping.
Luke 23:27  A large number of people followed him, including women who mourned and wailed for him.

You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy
John 20:19-20  On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you!" After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord.
Psalm 126:5  Those who sow with tears will reap with songs of joy.

A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come
Isaiah 13:8  Terror will seize them, pain and anguish will grip them; they will writhe like a woman in labor. They will look aghast at each other, their faces aflame.
1 Thessalonians 5:3  While people are saying, "Peace and safety," destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.

Now is your time of grief
John 16:6  "Rather you are filled with grief because I have said these things."

but I will see you again and you will rejoice
John 16:16  Jesus went on to say, "In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me."

and no one will take away your joy
John 15:11  "I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete."
Romans 15:13  May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

John 16:16-18

Jesus went on to say, "In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me." At this, some of his disciples said to one another, "What does he mean by saying, 'In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,' and 'Because I am going to the Father'?" They kept asking, "What does he mean by 'a little while'? We don't understand what he is saying."

In a little while you will see me no more
John 7:33-34  Jesus said, "I am with you for only a short time, and then I am going to the one who sent me. You will look for me, but you will not find me; and where I am you cannot come."

and then after a little while you will see me
John 16:22  "So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy."
John 14:18-24  "I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. Before long the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them." Then Judas (not Judas Iscariot) said, "But, Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world?" Jesus replied, "Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me."

What does he mean by saying, 'In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,' and 'Because I am going to the Father'?
John 16:4-5  "I have told you this, so that when their time comes you will remember that I warned you about them. I did not tell you this from the beginning because I was with you, but now I am going to him who sent me. None of you asks me, 'Where are you going?' "

John 16:12-15

"I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you."

I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear
Mark 4:33  With many similar parables Jesus spoke the word to them, as much as they could understand.
1 Corinthians 3:2-3  I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready. You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere humans?

But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes
John 14:16-17  "And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever--the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. but you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you."

he will guide you into all the truth
Psalm 25:5  Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long.
John 14:26  "But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you."

All that belongs to the Father is mine
John 17:9-10  "I pray for them, I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours. All I have is yours, and all you have is mine. And glory has come to me through them."

John 16:7-11 Part 2 of 2

"But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: About sin, because people do not believe in me; about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; and about judgment because the prince of this world now stands condemned."

about righteousness
Romans 1:17  For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed--a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: "The righteous will live by faith." (Habakkuk 2:4)
Romans 3:21-24  But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.
1 Peter 3:18  For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit.

because I am going to the Father
John 16:28  "I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father."
John 7:33  Jesus said, "I am with you for only a short time, and then I am going to the one who sent me."

and about judgment because the prince of this world now stands condemned
John 12:31  "Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out."
2 Corinthians 4:4  The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.

John 16:7-11 Part 1 of 2

"But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: About sin, because people do not believe in me; about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; and about judgment because the prince of this world now stands condemned."

unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you
John 14:16-17a  "And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever--the Spirit of truth."
John 14:26  "But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you."
John 15:26  "When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father--the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father--he will testify about me."

but if I go, I will send him to you
John 7:38-39  "Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them." By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.

about sin, because people do not believe in me
John 15:22  "They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the one who sent me."

about righteousness
Acts 3:14  "You disowned the Holy and Righteous One and asked that a murderer be released to you."
Acts 7:52-53  "Was there ever a prophet your ancestors did not persecute? They even killed those who predicted the coming of the Righteous One. And now you have betrayed and murdered him--you who have received the law that was given through angels but have not obeyed it."
