Psalm 54 - Title
Title: When the Ziphites had gone to Saul and said, "Is not David hiding among us?"
1 Samuel 23:19-23 The Ziphites went up to Saul at Gibeah and said, "Is not David hiding among us in the strongholds at Horesh, on the hill of Hakilah, south of Jeshimon? Now, Your Majesty, come down whenever it pleases you to do so, and we will be responsible for giving him into your hands." Saul replied, "The LORD bless you for your concern for me. Go and get more information. Find out where David usually goes and who has seen him there. They tell me he is very crafty. Find out about all the hiding places he uses and come back to me with definite information. Then I will go with you; if he is in the area, I will track him down among all the clans of Judah."
1 Samuel 26:1-4 The Ziphites went to Saul at Gibeah and said, "Is not David hiding on the hill of Hakilah, which faces Jeshimon?" So Saul went down to the Desert of Ziph, with his three thousand select Israelite troops, to search there for David. Saul made his camp beside the road on the hill of Hakilah facing Jeshimon, but David stayed in the wilderness. When he saw that Saul had followed him there, he sent out scouts and learned that Saul had definitely arrived.

Psalm 53:4-6
Do all these evildoers know nothing? They devour my people as though eating bread; they never call on God. But there they are, overwhelmed with dread, where there is nothing to dread. God scattered the bones of those who attacked you; you put them to shame, for God despised them. Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion! When God restores his people, let Jacob rejoice and Israel be glad!
But there they are, overwhelmed with dread, where there is nothing to dread
Leviticus 26:17 " 'I will set my face against you so that you will be defeated by your enemies; those who hate you will rule over you, and you will flee even when no one is pursuing you.' "
God scattered the bones
2 Kings 23:14 Josiah smashed the sacred stones and cut down the Asherah poles and covered the sites with human bones.
Psalm 141:7 They will say, "As one plows and breaks up the earth, so our bones have been scattered at the mouth of the grave."
Jeremiah 8:1-2 " 'At that time, declares the LORD, the bones of the kings and officials of Judah, the bones of the priests and prophets, and the bones of the people of Jerusalem will be removed from their graves. They will be exposed to the sun and the moon and all the stars of the heavens, which they have loved and served and which they have followed and consulted and worshiped. They will not be gathered up or buried, but they will be like dung lying on the ground.' "
Ezekiel 6:5 " 'I will lay the dead bodies of the Israelites in front of their idols, and I will scatter your bones around your altar.' "
of those who attacked you
2 Kings 17:20 Therefore the LORD rejected all the people of Israel; he afflicted them and gave them into the hands of plunderers, until he thrust them from his presence.
you put them to shame
Job 8:22 "Your enemies will be clothed in shame, and the tents of the wicked will be no more."
for God despised them
Jeremiah 6:30 "They are called rejected silver, because the LORD has rejected them." (the hardened rebels, the wicked)
Jeremiah 14:19 Have you rejected Judah completely? Do you despise Zion? Why have you afflicted us so that we cannot be healed? We hoped for peace but no good has come, for a time of healing but there is only terror.
Lamentations 5:21-22 Restore us to yourself, LORD, that we may return; renew our days as of old unless you have utterly rejected us and are angry with us beyond measure.

Psalm 53:1-3 Part 2 of 2
The fool says
in his heart, "There is no God." They are corrupt, and their ways are
vile; there is no one who does good. God looks down from heaven on all
mankind to see if there are any who understand, any who seek God.
Everyone has turned away, all have become corrupt; there is no one who
does good, not even one.
God looks down from heaven on all mankind
Psalm 33:13-15 From heaven the LORD looks down and sees all mankind; from his dwelling place he watches all who live on earth--he who forms the hearts of all, who considers everything they do.
to see if there are any who understand
Psalm 82:5 "The 'gods' know nothing, they understand nothing. They walk about in darkness; all the foundations of the earth are shaken."
Jeremiah 4:22 "My people are fools; they do not know me. They are senseless children; they have no understanding. They are skilled in doing evil; they know not how to do good."
Jeremiah 8:8-9 " 'How can you say, "We are wise, for we have the law of the LORD," when actually the lying pen of the scribes has handled it falsely? The wise will be put to shame; they will be dismayed and trapped. Since they have rejected the word of the LORD, what kind of wisdom do they have?' "
any who seek God
2 Chronicles 15:1-2 The Spirit of God came on Azariah son of Oded. He went out to meet Asa and said to him, "Listen to me, Asa and all Judah and Benjamin. The LORD is with you when you are with him. If you seek him, he will be found by you, but if you forsake him, he will forsake you."
there is no one who does good, not even one
Romans 3:10-12 As it is written: "There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God. All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one." (Psalm 14:1-3; Psalm 53:1-3; Ecclesiastes 7:20)

Psalm 52:6-7
The righteous will see and fear; they will laugh at you, saying, "Here now is the man who did not make God his stronghold but trusted in his great wealth and grew strong by destroying others!"
The righteous will see and fear; they will laugh at you
Job 22:19-20 "The righteous see their (the wicked's) ruin and rejoice; the innocent mock them, saying, 'Surely our foes are destroyed, and fire devours their wealth.' "
saying, "Here now is the man who did not make God his stronghold ..."
2 Samuel 22:2-3 He (David) said, "The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation. He is my stronghold, my refuge and my savior--from violent people you save me."
"... but trusted in his great wealth"
Psalm 49:5-6 Why should I fear when evil days come, when wicked deceivers surround me--those who trust in their wealth and boast of their great riches?
Proverbs 11:28 Those who trust in their riches will fall, but the righteous will thrive like a green leaf.
Mark 10:23-27 Jesus looked around and said to his disciples. "How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!" The disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said again, "Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God." The disciples were even more amazed, and said to each other, "Who then can be saved?" Jesus looked at them and said, "With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God."

Psalm 52:3
You love evil rather than good, falsehood rather than speaking the truth.
You love evil rather than good
Exodus 10:10-11 Pharaoh said, "The LORD be with you--if I let you go, along with your women and children! Clearly you are bent on evil. No! Have only the men go and worship the LORD, since that is what you have been asking for." Then Moses and Aaron were driven out of Pharaoh's presence.
1 Samuel 12:24-25 "Be sure to fear the LORD and serve him faithfully with all your heart; consider what great things he has done for you. Yet if you persist in doing evil, both you and your king will perish."
Amos 5:14-15 Seek good, not evil, that you may live. Then the LORD God Almighty will be with you, just as you say he is. Hate evil, love good; maintain justice in the courts. Perhaps the LORD God Almighty will have mercy on the remnant of Joseph.
John 3:19-21 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.
falsehood rather than speaking the truth
Psalm 58:3 Even from birth the wicked go astray; from the womb they are wayward, spreading lies.
Jeremiah 9:5-6 "Friend deceives friend, and no one speaks the truth. They have taught their tongues to lie; they weary themselves with sinning. You live in the midst of deception; in their deceit they refuse to acknowledge me," declares the LORD.
Revelation 21:8 "But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars--they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death."

Psalm 52:1-2
Title: When Doeg the Edomite had gone to Saul and told him: "David has gone to the house of Ahimelek."
Why do you boast of evil, you mighty hero? Why do you boast all day long, you who are a disgrace in the eyes of God? You who practice deceit, your tongue plots destruction: it is like a sharpened razor.
Title: When Doeg the Edomite had gone to Saul and told him: "David has gone to the house of Ahimelek."
1 Samuel 21:7 Now one of Saul's servants was there that day, detained before the LORD; he was Doeg the Edomite, Saul's chief shepherd.
1 Samuel 22:9-10 But Doeg the Edomite, who was standing with Saul's officials, said, "I saw the son of Jesse come to Ahimelek son of Ahitub at Nob. Ahimelek inquired of the LORD for him; he also gave him provisions and the sword of Goliath the Philistine."
Why do you boast
Psalm 10:2-3 In his arrogance the wicked man hunts down the weak, who are caught in the schemes he devises. He boasts about the cravings of his heart; he blesses the greedy and reviles the LORD.
Psalm 94:4 They pour out arrogant words; all the evildoers are full of boasting.
all day long
Psalm 44:8 In God we make our boast all day long, we will praise your name forever.
You who practice deceit
Psalm 50:19 You use your mouth for evil and harness your tongue to deceit.
your tongue plots destruction
Psalm 5:9 Not a word from their mouth can be trusted; their heart is filled with malice. Their throat is an open grave; with their tongues they tell lies.
it is like a sharpened razor
Psalm 57:4 I am in the midst of lions; I am forced to dwell among ravenous beasts--men whose teeth are spears and arrows, whose tongues are sharp swords.
Psalm 59:7-8 See what they spew from their mouths--the words from their lips are sharp as swords, and they think, "Who can hear us?" But you laugh at them, LORD; you scoff at all those nations.

Psalm 51:16-17
You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings. My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise.
You do not delight in sacrifice
1 Samuel 15:22 But Samuel replied: "Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the LORD? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams."
My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit
Proverbs 15:8 The LORD detests the sacrifice of the wicked, but the prayer of the upright pleases him.
Haggai 2:14 Then Haggai said, " 'So it is with this people and this nation in my sight,' declares the LORD. 'Whatever they do and whatever they offer there is defiled.' "
a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise
Matthew 11:29 "Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls."
Psalm 34:17-18 The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles. The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

You do not delight in sacrifice
1 Samuel 15:22 But Samuel replied: "Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the LORD? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams."

Psalm 51:12-13
Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit to sustain me. Then I will teach transgressors your ways, so that sinners will turn back to you.
Restore to me the joy of your salvation
Job 33:26 "... then that person can pray to God and find favor with him, they will see God's face and shout for joy; he will restore them to full well-being."
grant me a willing spirit
Psalm 110:3 Your troops will be willing on your day of battle. Arrayed in holy splendor, your young men will come to you like dew from the morning's womb.
to sustain me
Psalm 18:35 You make your saving help my shield, and your right hand sustains me; your help has made me great.
Then I will teach transgressors your ways
Exodus 33:13 "If you are pleased with me, teach me your ways so I may know you and continue to find favor with you. Remember that this nation is your people."
Acts 9:21-22 All those who heard him (Saul) were astonished and asked, "Isn't he the man who raised havoc in Jerusalem among those who call on this name? And hasn't he come here to take them as prisoners to the chief priests?" Yet Saul grew more and more powerful and baffled the Jews living in Damascus by proving that Jesus is the Messiah.
so that sinners
Psalm 1:1 Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, ...
will turn back to you
Job 33:27-28 "And they will go to to others and say, 'I have sinned, I have perverted what is right, but I did not get what I deserved. God has delivered me from going down to the pit, and I shall live to enjoy the light of life.' "

Psalm 51:10
Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
Create in me a pure heart, O God
Psalm 24:3-4 Who may ascend the mountain of the LORD? Who may stand in his holy place? The one who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not trust in an idol or swear by a false god.
Psalm 78:36-37 But then they would flatter him with their mouths, lying to him with their tongues; their hearts were not loyal to him, they were not faithful to his covenant.
Matthew 5:8 "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God."
Acts 15:7-9 After much discussion, Peter got up and addressed them: "Brothers, you know that some time ago God made a choice among you that the Gentiles might hear from my lips the message of the gospel and believe. God, who knows the heart, showed that he accepted them by giving the Holy Spirit to them, just as he did to us. He did not discriminate between us and them, for he purified their hearts by faith."
and renew a steadfast spirit within me
Ezekiel 18:30-32 "Therefore, you Israelites, I will judge each of you according to your own ways, declares the Sovereign LORD. Repent! Turn away from all your offenses; then sin will not be your downfall. Rid yourselves of all the offenses you have committed, and get a new heart and a new spirit. Why will you die, people of Israel? For I take no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Sovereign LORD. Repent and live!"
Ezekiel 36:26-28 " 'I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws. Then you will live in the land I gave your ancestors; you will be my people, and I will be your God.' Psalm 51:8-9
Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice. Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity.
Let me hear joy and gladness
Isaiah 35:10 ... and those the LORD has rescued will return. They will enter Zion with singing; everlasting joy will crown their heads. Gladness and joy will overtake them, and sorrow and sighing will flee away.
Jeremiah 33:10-11 "This is what the LORD says: 'You say about this place, "It is a desolate waste, without people or animals." Yet in the towns of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem that are deserted, inhabited by neither people nor animals, there will be heard once more the sounds of joy and gladness, the voices of bride and bridegroom, and the voices of those who bring thank offerings to the house of the LORD, saying, "Give thanks to the LORD Almighty, for the LORD is good; his love endures forever." For I will restore the fortunes of the land as they were before,' says the LORD."
Joel 1:15-16 Alas for that day! For the day of the LORD is near; it will come like destruction from the Almighty. Has not the food been cut off before our very eyes--joy and gladness from the house of our God?
let the bones you have crushed rejoice
Psalm 6:2 Have mercy on me, LORD, for I am faint; heal me, LORD, for my bones are in agony.
Proverbs 17:22 A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.
Hide your face from my sins
Jeremiah 16:17 "My eyes are on all their ways; they are not hidden from me, nor is their sin concealed from my eyes."
Zechariah 4:9-10 "The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this temple; his hands will also complete it. Then you will know that the LORD Almighty has sent me to you. Who dares despise the day of small things, since the seven eyes of the LORD that range throughout the earth will rejoice when they see the chosen capstone in the hand of Zerubbabel?"
and blot out all my iniquity
2 Samuel 12:13-14 Then David said to Nathan, "I have sinned against the LORD." Nathan replied, "The LORD has taken away your sin. You are not going to die. But because by doing this you have shown utter contempt for the LORD, the son born to you will die."

Psalm 51:5-6
Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me. Yet you desired faithfulness even in the womb; you taught me wisdom in that secret place.
Surely I was sinful
Leviticus 5:2-5 " 'If anyone becomes aware that they are guilty--if they unwittingly touch anything ceremonially unclean (whether the carcass of an unclean animal, wild or domestic, or of any unclean creature that moves along the ground) and they are unaware that they have become unclean, but then they come to realize their guilt; or if they touch human uncleanness (anything that would make them unclean) even though they are unaware of it, but then they learn of it and realize their guilt; or if anyone thoughtlessly takes an oath to do anything, whether good or evil (in any matter one might carelessly swear about) even though they are unaware of it, but then they learn of it and realize their guilt--when anyone becomes aware that they are guilty in any of these matters, they must confess in what way they have sinned.' "
at birth
Job 5:7 "Yet man is born to trouble as surely as sparks fly upward."
Psalm 58:3 Even from birth the wicked go astray; from the womb they are wayward, spreading lies.
you taught me wisdom
Psalm 119:66 Teach me knowledge and good judgment, for I trust your commands.
Psalm 143:10 Teach me to do your will, for you are my God; may your good Spirit lead me on level ground.
in that secret place
Job 34:32 " 'Teach me what I cannot see; If I have done wrong, I will not do so again.' "
Psalm 86:11 Teach me your way, LORD, that I may rely on your faithfulness; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name.
Psalm 139:23-24 Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
Psalm 143:8 Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I entrust my life.

Psalm 51:3-4
For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight; so you are right in your verdict and justified when you judge.
For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me
Isaiah 59:12-13 For our offenses are many in your sight, and our sins testify against us, and we acknowledge our iniquities: rebellion and treachery against the LORD, turning our backs on our God, inciting revolt and oppression, uttering lies our hearts have conceived.
Against you, you only, have I sinned
1 Samuel 15:24 Then Saul said to Samuel, "I have sinned. I violated the LORD's command and your instructions. I was afraid of the men so I gave in to them."
and done what is evil in your sight
Genesis 20:6-7 Then God said to him (Abimelek king of Gerar) in the dream, "Yes, I know you did this with a clear conscience, and so I have kept you from sinning against me.
Against you, you only, have I sinned

and done what is evil in your sight
Genesis 20:6-7 Then God said to him (Abimelek king of Gerar) in the dream, "Yes, I know you did this with a clear conscience, and so I have kept you from sinning against me. That is why I did not let you touch her. Now return the man's wife, for he is a prophet, and he will pray for you and you will live. But if you do not return her, you may be sure that you and all who belong to you will die."

Psalm 50:22-23
"Consider this, you who forget God, or I will tear you to pieces, with no one to rescue you: Those who sacrifice thank offerings honor me, and to the blameless I will show my salvation."
Consider this, you who forget God
Job 8:11-13 "Can papyrus grow tall where there is no marsh? Can reeds thrive without water? While still growing and uncut, they wither more quickly than grass. Such is the destiny of all who forget God; so perishes the hope of the godless."
Isaiah 17:10-11 You have forgotten God your Savior; you have not remembered the Rock, your fortress. Therefore, though you set out the finest plants and plant imported vines, though on the day you set them out you make them grow, and on the morning when you plant them, you bring them to bud, yet the harvest will be as nothing in the day of disease and incurable pain.
or I will tear you to pieces, with no one to rescue you
Deuteronomy 32:39 "See now that I myself am he! There is no god besides me. I put to death and I bring to life, I have wounded and I will heal, and no one can deliver out of my hand."
Micah 5:8 The remnant of Jacob will be among the nations, in the midst of many peoples, like a lion among the beasts of the forest, like a young lion among flocks of sheep, which mauls and mangles as it goes and no one can rescue.
and to the blameless I will show my salvation
Psalm 9:13-14 LORD, see how my enemies persecute me! Have mercy and lift me up from the gates of death, that I may declare your praises in the gates of Daughter Zion, and there rejoice in your salvation.
Psalm 91:16 "With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation."
Psalm 98:3 He has remembered his love and his faithfulness to Israel; all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.
Isaiah 52:10 The LORD will lay bare his holy arm in the sight of all the nations, and all the ends of the earth will see the salvation of our God.
