1 John 4:19-21 Part 1 of 2

We love because he first loved us. Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen. And he has given us this command: Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister.

We love because he first loved us.
1 John 4:10  This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. (see verses 7-12)

Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister
1 John 2:9  Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates a brother or sister is still in the darkness.
1 John 2:11  But anyone who hates a brother or sister is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness. They do not know where they are going, because the darkness has blinded them. (see verses 9-11)
Leviticus 19:17  " 'Do not hate a fellow Israelite in your heart. Rebuke your neighbor frankly so you will not share in their guilt.' "
1 John 3:10  This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not God's child, nor is anyone who does not love their brother or sister. (see verses 1-10)
1 John 3:15   Anyone who hates a brother or sister is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life residing in him.
1 John 3:16  This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.

is a liar.
1 John 1:6  If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. (see verses 5-10)
John 3:19-21  This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of the light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.
1 John 2:4  Whoever says, "I know him," but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. (see verses 3-6)

1 John 4:17-18 Part 2 of 2

This is how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment: In this world we are like Jesus. There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.

Acts 17:31  "For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to everyone by raising him from the dead." (see verses 22-33)
2 Peter 2:9  ... if this is so, then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials and to hold the unrighteous for punishment on the day of judgment. (see all chapter 2)

Jude 6  And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their proper dwelling--these he has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day. (see all Jude)

There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.

Hebrews 2:14-15  Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death--that is, the devil--and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death. (see verses 5-18)

1 John 3:11  For this is the message you heard from the beginning: we should love one another.

1 John 4:4-6 Part 4 of 4

You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. They are from the world and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them. We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. This is how we recognize the Spirit of truth and the spirit of falsehood.

and the spirit of falsehood.
Mark 13:5-6  Jesus said to them, "Watch out that no one deceives you. Many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am he,' and will deceive many." (see verses 1-8)
Mark 13:22-23  "For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. So be on your guard; I have told you everything ahead of time." (see verses 9-37)
Jeremiah 29:8-9  Yes, this is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: "Do not let the prophets and diviners among you deceive you. Do not listen to the dreams you encourage them to have. They are prophesying lies to you in my name. I have not sent them," declares the LORD.
2 Thessalonians 2:3  Don't let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to destruction. (see verses 1-12)
2 Thessalonians 2:9-12  The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with how Satan works. He will use all sorts of displays of power through signs and wonders that serve the lie, and all the ways that wickedness deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness. (see verses 1-12)
1 Timothy 4:1  The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. (see verses 1-10)

1 John 4:4-6 Part 3 of 4

You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. They are from the world and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them. We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. This is how we recognize the Spirit of truth and the spirit of falsehood.

They are from the world and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them. We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us.
John 15:19  "If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, bur I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you." (see verses 18-25)
John 17:14  "I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world."
John 17:16  "They are not of the world, even as I am not of it." (see verses 6-19)

We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us.
John 8:47  "Whoever belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God." (see verses 31-47)

This is how we recognize the Spirit of truth
John 14:16-17  "And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever--the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you." (see verses 15-31)
John 15:26-27  "When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father--the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father--he will testify about me. And you also must testify, for you have been with me from the beginning." (see verses 15:26-16:11)
John 16:13  "But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. (see verses 12-15)
1 John 5:6  This is the one who came by water and blood--Jesus Christ. He did not come by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. (see verses 6-12)

1 John 4:4-6 Part 2 of 4

You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. They are from the world and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them. We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. This is how we recognize the Spirit of truth and the spirit of falsehood.

You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, (cont.)
Revelation 3:5-6  "The one who is victorious will, like them, be dressed in white. I will never blot out the name of that person from the book of life, but will acknowledge that name before my Father and his angels. Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches." (see verses 1-6)
Revelation 3:12-13  "The one who is victorious I will make a pillar in the temple of my God. Never again will they leave it. I will write on them the name of my God and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which is coming down out of heaven from my God; and I will also write on them my new name. Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches." (see verses 7-13)
Revelation 3:21-22  "To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I was victorious and sat down with my Father on his throne. Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches." (see verses 14-22)
Revelation 21:7  "Those who are victorious will inherit all this, and I will be their God and they will be my children." (see verses 1-8)

because the one who is in you

is greater than the one who is in the world.
2 Kings 6:16-17  "Don't be afraid," the prophet answered. "Those who are with us are more than those who are with them." And Elisha prayed, "Open his eyes, LORD, so that he may see." Then the LORD opened the servant's eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha. (see verses 8-23)

We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. This is how we recognize the Spirit of truth and the spirit of falsehood.

You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them,
John 16:33  "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." (see all chapter 16)
Romans 8:37  No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. (see all chapter 8)
1 John 5:3-4  In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. (see verses 1-12)

Revelation 2:17  "Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious, I will give some of the hidden manna. I will also give that person a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to the one who receives it." (see verses 12-17)
Revelation 2:26-29  "To the one who is victorious and does my will to the end, I will give authority over the nations--that one 'will rule them with an iron scepter and will dash them to pieces like pottery' (Psalm 2:9)--just as I have received authority from my Father. I will also give that one the morning star. Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches." (see verses 18-29)

1 John 4:1-3 Part 2 of 2

Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.

This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God. Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God,
John 1:14  The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. (see verses 1-18)
1 Corinthians 12:3  Therefore, I want you to know that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, "Jesus be cursed," and no one can say "Jesus is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit. (see verses 1-3)
1 Timothy 3:16  Beyond all question, the mystery from which true godliness springs is great: He appeared in the flesh, was vindicated by the Spirit, was seen by angels, was preached among the nations, was believed on in the world, was taken up in glory.
1 John 1:1-2  That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched--this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us. (see verses 1-4)

but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.
Romans 8:7-8  The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God's law, nor can it do so. Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God. (see verses 1-11)
1 Thessalonians 5:20-22  Do not treat prophecies with contempt but test them all; hold on to what is good, reject every kind of evil.
1 John 2:22  Who is the liar? It is whoever denies that Jesus is the Christ. Such a person is the antichrist--denying the Father and the Son. (see verses 18-23)
2 John 7  I say this because many deceivers, who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh, have gone out into the world. Any such person is the deceiver and the antichrist. (see all 2 John)

1 John 4:1-3 Part 1 of 2

Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.

Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.
Jeremiah 23:16  This is what the LORD Almighty says: "Do not listen to what the prophets are prophesying to you; they fill you with false hopes. They speak visions from their own minds, not from the mouth of the LORD. (see verses 9-40)
(see all chapter 29)
Ezekiel 22:28  "Her (Jerusalem's) prophets whitewash these deeds (verse 27) for them by false visions and lying divinations. They say, 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says'--when the LORD has not spoken." (see verses 23-31)
Matthew 7:15  "Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves." (see verses 15-20)
Mark 13:22  "For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect." (see verses 20-23, also Matthew 24:24)
Acts 20:28-30  "Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God which he bought with his own blood. I know that after I leave, savage wolves will come in among you and will not spare the flock. Even from your own number men will arise and distort the truth in order to draw away disciples after them. (see verses 25-31)
1 Timothy 4:1  The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. (see verses 1-5)
2 Peter 2:1  But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them--bringing swift destruction on themselves. (see verses 1-3)
1 John 2:18  Dear children, this is the last hour; and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come. This is how we know it is the last hour. (see verses 18-27)

1 John 3:23-24 Part 2 of 2

And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us. The one who keeps God's commands lives in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us.

and to love one another as he commanded us.
John 13:34  "A new commandment I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another." (see verses 31-38, also John 15:12)
1 Thessalonians 4:9  Now about your love for one another we do not need to write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love each other. (see verses 9-12)
1 Peter 1:22  Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for each other, love one another deeply, from the heart. (see also 1 John 4:10-11)

The one who keeps God's commands lives in him, and he in them.
1 John 2:3-6  We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands. Whoever says, "I know him," but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. But if anyone obeys his word, love for God is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him: Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did. (see verses 3-11)
1 John 4:15  If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in them and they in God. (see verses 7-21)

And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us.
1 Thessalonians 4:7-8  For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life. Therefore, anyone who rejects this instruction does not reject a human being but God, the very God who gives you his Holy Spirit. (see verses 1-8)
1 John 4:13  This is how we know we live in him and he in us: He has given us of his Spirit. (see verses 11-16)
Romans 8:15-16  The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, "Abba, Father." The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children. (see verses 12-17)

1 John 3:23-24 Part 1of 2

And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us. The one who keeps God's commands lives in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us.

And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ,
John 6:29  Jesus answered, "The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent." (see verses 25-40)
Luke 24:46-47  He told them, "This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem." (see verses 36-53)
Acts 5:31  "God exalted him to his own right hand as Prince and Savior that he might bring Israel to repentance and forgive their sins." (see verses 27-32)
Acts 10:43  "All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name." (see verses 34-48)
Acts 13:38  "Therefore, my friends, I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sin is proclaimed to you." (see verses 26-41)
John 1:12  Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God-- (see verses 1-18)
John 3:18  Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God's one and only Son. (see verses 16-21)
John 20:30-31  Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. (see the whole book of John)
1 Corinthians 6:11  And this is what some of you were (see verses 9-10). But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of God. (see all chapter 6)
1 John 5:13  I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life. (see verses 9-15)

1 John 3:19-22 Part 3 of 3

This is how we know that we belong to the truth and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence: If our hearts condemn us, we know that God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God and receive from him anything we ask, because we keep his commands and do what pleases him.

and receive from him anything we ask, (continued)
James 1:5-8  If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the LORD. Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.
James 4:2-3  You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures. (see all chapter 4)
James 5:16  Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. (see verses 13-20)
1 John 5:14-15  This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us--whatever we ask--we know that we have what we asked of him.

because we keep his commands and do what pleases him.
Hebrews 13:20-21  Now may the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

1 John 3:19-22 Part 1 of 3

This is how we know that we belong to the truth and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence: If our hearts condemn us, we know that God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God and receive from him anything we ask, because we keep his commands and do what pleases him.

This is how we know that we belong to the truth and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence: If our hearts condemn us, we know that God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God
Ephesians 3:12  In him and through faith in him we may approach God with freedom and confidence. (see verses 1-13)
Ephesians 2:18  For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit. (see verses 11-18)
2 Corinthians 3:4  Such confidence we have through Christ before God. (see verses 4-6)
Hebrews 3:6  But Christ is faithful as the Son over God's house. And we are his house, if indeed we hold firmly to our confidence and the hope in which we glory. (see all chapter 3)
Hebrews 4:16  Let us then approach God's throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. (see verses 14-16)
Hebrews 10:23  Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. (see verses 19-25)
1 John 2:28  And now, dear children, continue in him, so that when he appears we may be confident and unashamed before him at his coming. (see verses 20-29)
1 John 4:15-18  If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in them and they in God. And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them. This is how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment: In this world we are like Jesus. There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. (see verses 7-21)

1 John 3:16-18

This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.

This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us.
John 10:11  "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep." (see all chapter 10)

And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.
John 15:13  "Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends." (see verses 9-17)
Philippians 2:17  But even if I am being poured out like a drink offering on the sacrifice and service coming from your faith, I am glad and rejoice with all of you. (see verses 1-18)
1 Thessalonians 2:7b-8  Just as a nursing mother cares for her children, so we cared for you. Because we loved you so much, we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God but our lives as well. (see all chapter 2)

If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them,
Deuteronomy 15:7-8  If anyone is poor among your fellow Israelites in any of the towns of the land the LORD your God is giving you, do not be hardhearted or tightfisted toward them. Rather, be openhanded and freely lend them whatever they need. (see verses 1-11)
James 2:15-16  Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to them, "Go in peace; keep warm and well fed," but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? (see verses 14-26)

how can the love of God be in that person?
1 John 4:20  Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother of sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen. (see verses 7-21)

Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.
Ezekiel 33:31  "My people come to you, as they usually do, and sit before you to hear your words, but they do not put them into practice. Their mouths speak love, but their hearts are greedy for unjust gain." (see verses 21-33)
Romans 12:9  Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. (see all chapter 12)
