Many times he delivered them, but they were bent on rebellion and they wasted away in their sin. Yet he took note of their distress when he heard their cry; for their sake he remembered his covenant and out of his great love he relented.
Many times he delivered them
Nehemiah 9:28 "But as soon as they were at rest, they again did what was evil in your sight. Then you abandoned them to the hand of their enemies so that they ruled over them. And when they cried out to you again, you heard from heaven, and in your compassion you delivered them time after time."
Psalm 81:13-14 "If my people would only listen to me, if Israel would only follow my ways, how quickly I would subdue their enemies and turn my hand against their foes!"
but they were bent on rebellion
Judges 2:18-19 (read verses 16-19) Whenever the LORD raised up a judge for them, he was with the judge and saved them out of the hands of their enemies as long as the judge lived; for the LORD relented because of their groaning under those who oppressed and afflicted them. But when the judge died, the people returned to ways even more corrupt than those of their ancestors, following other gods and serving and worshiping them. They refused to give up their evil practices and stubborn ways.
Judges 6:1 (read verses 1-7) The Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD, and for seven years he gave them into the hands of the Midianites.
yet he took note of their distress when he heard their cry
Judges 3:9 But when they cried out to the LORD, he raised up for them a deliverer, Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, who saved them.
for their sake he remembered his covenant
Psalm 105:8-9 He remembers his covenant forever, the promise he made, for a thousand generations, the covenant he made with Abraham, the oath he swore to Isaac.
Luke 1:72 ". . . to show mercy to our ancestors and to remember his holy covenant, . . ."
and out of his great love
Psalm 17:7 Show me the wonders of your great love, you who save by your right hand those who take refuge in you from their foes.
Psalm 103:11 For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; . . .
he relented
Exodus 32:14 Then the LORD relented and did not bring on his people the disaster he had threatened.
