1 Timothy 3:8-10

In the same way deacons are to be worthy of respect, sincere, not indulging in much wine, and not pursuing dishonest gain. They must keep hold of the deep truths of the faith with a clear conscience. They must first be tested and then if there is nothing against them, let them serve as deacons. 

In the same way deacons 
Philippians 1:1-2  Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, To all God's holy people in Christ Jesus at Philippi, together with the overseers and deacons: Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

are to be worthy of respect, sincere, not indulging in much wine, and not pursuing dishonest gain 
1 Timothy 5:23  Stop drinking only water, and use a little wine because of your stomach and your frequent illnesses.
Titus 1:7  Since an overseer manages God's household, he must be blameless--not overbearing, not quick-tempered, not given to drunkenness, not violent, not pursuing dishonest gain.

They must keep hold of the deep truths of the faith with a clear conscience 
Acts 23:1  Paul looked straight at the Sanhedrin and said, "My brothers, I have fulfilled my duty to God in all good conscience to this day."
1 Corinthians 4:4  My conscience is clear, but that does not make me innocent. It is the Lord who judges me.
2 Corinthians 1:12  Now this is our boast: Our conscience testifies that we have conducted ourselves in the world, and especially in our relations with you, with integrity and godly sincerity. We have done so, relying not on worldly wisdom but on God's grace.

They must first be tested and then if there is nothing against them, let them serve as deacons 
1 Timothy 5:22  Do not be hasty in the laying on of hands, and do not share in the sins of others. Keep yourself pure.
Job 23:10  "But he knows the way I take; when he has tested me I will come forth as gold."
Psalm 66:10  For you, God, tested us; you refined us like silver.
Hebrews 1:17-18  By faith Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice. He who had embraced the promises was about to sacrifice his one and only son, even though God had said to him, "It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned."
