Psalm 78:69-72

He built his sanctuary like the heights, like the earth that he established forever. He chose David his servant and took him from the sheep pens; from tending the sheep he brought him to be the shepherd of his people Jacob, of Israel his inheritance. And David shepherded them with integrity of heart; with skillful hands he led them. 

He built his sanctuary like the heights 
Psalm 15:1  LORD, who may dwell in your sacred tent? Who may live on your holy mountain?

He chose David his servant 
1 Samuel 16:1  The LORD said to Samuel, "How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and be on your way; I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem. I have chosen one of his sons to be king."
2 Samuel 7:8  "Now then, tell my servant David, 'This is what the LORD Almighty says: I took you from the pasture, from tending the flock, and appointed you ruler over my people Israel.' "
1 Kings 8:16  " 'Since the day I brought my people Israel out of Egypt, I have not chosen a city in any tribe of Israel to have a temple built so that my Name might be there, but I have chosen David to rule my people Israel.' "
Acts 13:22  "After removing Saul, he made David their king. God testified concerning him: 'I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.' "

from tending the sheep 
1 Samuel 16:11  "Are these all the sons you have?"  "There is still the youngest," Jesse answered. "He is tending the sheep." Samuel said, "Send for him; we will not sit down until he arrives."

to be the shepherd of his people Jacob, of Israel his inheritance 
Psalm 28:9  Save your people and bless your inheritance; be their shepherd and carry them forever. 
Psalm 23:1  The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing. 
Psalm 78:52  But he brought his people out like a flock; he led them like sheep through the wilderness.

And David shepherded them with integrity of heart 
John 10:11  "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep."
Revelation 7:17  "For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd; 'he will lead them to springs of living water.' (Isaiah 49:10) 'And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.' (Isaiah 25:8)"
