John 1:21-23

They asked him, "Then who are you? Are you Elijah?" He said, "I am not."  "Are you the Prophet:" He answered, "No." Finally they said, "Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?" John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, "I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness, 'Make straight the way for the Lord.' "

Are you Elijah?
Matthew 11:10-15  "This is the one about whom it is written: 'I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.' (Malachi 3:1) Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. From the days of John the baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been subjected to violence, and violent people have been raiding it. For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John. And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come. Whoever has ears, let them hear."

Are you the Prophet?
Deuteronomy 18:15  The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me (Moses) from among you, from your fellow Israelites. You must listen to him.
Deuteronomy 18:18  "I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their fellow Israelites, and I will put my words in his mouth. He will tell them everything I command him."

John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet
Isaiah 40:3-5  A voice of one calling: "In the wilderness prepare the way for the LORD; make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low; the rough ground shall become level, and the rugged places a plain. And the glory of the LORD will be revealed, and all people will see it together. For the mouth of the LORD has spoken."
