John 1:19-20

Now this was John's testimony when the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was. He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, "I am not the Messiah."

Now this was John's testimony
Matthew 3:1-3  In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea and saying, "Repent for the kingdom of heaven has come near." This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah: "A voice of one calling in the wilderness, 'Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.' " (Isaiah 40:3)

when the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem
John 5:9b-10  The day on which this took place was a Sabbath, and so the Jewish leaders said to the man who had been healed, "It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat."
John 5:16  So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jewish leaders began to persecute him.
John 7:1  After this, Jesus went around in Galilee. He did not want to go about in Judea because the Jewish leaders there were looking for a way to kill him.

"I am not the Messiah"
John 3:28  "You yourselves can testify that I said, 'I am not the Messiah but am sent ahead of him.' "
Luke 3:15-16  The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John might possibly be the Messiah. John answered them all, "I baptize you with water. But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire."
