Therefore
Jesus no longer moved about publicly among the people of Judea. Instead
he withdrew to a region near the wilderness, to a village called
Ephraim, where he stayed with his disciples. When it was almost time for
the Jewish Passover, many went up from the country to Jerusalem for
their ceremonial cleansing before the Passover. They kept looking for
Jesus, and as they stood in the temple courts they asked one another,
"What do you think? Isn't he coming to the festival at all?" But the
chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that anyone who found
out where Jesus was should report it so that they might arrest him.
Many went up to Jerusalem for their ceremonial cleansing
John 3:25 An argument developed between some of John's disciples and a certain Jew over the matter of ceremonial washing.
John 2:6 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.
John 18:28 Then the Jewish leaders took Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor. By now it was early morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness they did not enter the palace, because they wanted to be able to eat the Passover.
Matthew 23:25-26 "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean."
Matthew 23:27-28 "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean. In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness."
They kept looking for Jesus
John 7:11 Now at the festival the Jewish leaders were watching for Jesus and asking, "Where is he?"
John 12:12-13 The next day the great crowd that had come for the festival heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, "Hosanna!" ("Save!") "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!" (Psalm 118:25-26) "Blessed is the king of Israel!"
