John 10:4-6

"When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice. But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger's voice." Jesus used this figure of speech, but the Pharisees did not understand what he was telling them.

John 10:3  "The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out."

Jesus used this figure of speech 
John 16:25  "Though I have been speaking figuratively, a time is coming when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father."
Psalm 78:12  I will open my mouth with a parable; I will utter hidden things, things from of old--...
Matthew 13:34  Jesus spoke all these things to the crowd in parables; he did not say anything to them without using a parable.
Mark 4:33-34  With many similar parables Jesus spoke the word to them, as much as they could understand. He did not say anything to them without using a parable. But when he was alone with his own disciples, he explained everything.

but the Pharisees did not understand what he was telling them 
Mark 9:32  But they did not understand what he meant and were afraid to ask him about it.
Luke 2:50  But they did not understand what he was saying to them.
Luke 9:45  But they did not understand what this meant. It was hidden from them, so that they did not grasp it, and they were afraid to ask him about it.
Luke 18:34  The disciples did not understand any of this. Its meaning was hidden from them, and they did not know what he was talking about.
John 8:27  They did not understand that he was telling them about his Father.
John 12:16  At first his disciples did not understand all this. Only after Jesus was glorified did they realize that these things had been written about him and that these things had been done to him.
