TRUST Jeremiah 2:36-37

Why do you go about so much, changing your ways? You will be disappointed by Egypt as you were by Assyria. You will also leave that place with your hands on your head, for the LORD has rejected those you trust; you will not be helped by them.

Why do you go about so much, changing your ways?
Jeremiah 31:22  "How long will you wander, unfaithful Daughter Israel? The LORD will create a new thing on earth--the woman will return to the man."

You will be disappointed by Egypt

Isaiah 30:1-3,7  "Woe to the obstinate children," declares the LORD, "to those who carry out plans that are not mine, forming an alliance, but not by my Spirit, heaping sin upon sin; who go down to Egypt without consulting me; who look for help to Pharaoh's protection, to Egypt's shade for refuge. But Pharaohs protection will be to your shame, Egypt's shade will bring you disgrace. ... to Egypt, whose help is utterly useless. Therefore I call her Rahab the Do-Nothing."
Jeremiah 37:7-8  "This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: Tell the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of me, 'Pharaoh's army, which has marched out to support you, will go back to its own land, to Egypt. Then the Babylonians will return and attack this city; they will capture it and burn it down.' "

You will also leave that place with your hands on your head
2 Samuel 13:19  Tamar put ashes on her head and tore the ornate robe she was wearing. She put her hands on her head and went away, weeping aloud as she went.

for the LORD has rejected those you trust; you will not be helped by them
Lamentations 1:7  In the days of her affliction and wandering Jerusalem remembers all the treasures that were hers in days of old. When her people fell into enemy hands, there was no one to help her. Her enemies looked at her and laughed at her destruction.
Lamentations 4:17  Moreover, our eyes failed, looking in vain for help; from our towers we watched for a nation that could not save us.

TRUST Isaiah 42:17

"But those who trust in idols, who say to images, 'You are our gods,' will be turned back in utter shame."

But those who trust in idols
Exodus 20:1-6  And God spoke all these words: "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments."

who say to images, 'You are our gods'
Exodus 32:2-4  Aaron answered them, "Take off the gold earrings that your wives, your sons and your daughters are wearing, and bring them to me." So all the people took off their earrings and brought them to Aaron. He took what they handed him and made it into an idol cast in the shape of a calf, fashioning it with a tool. Then they said, "These are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt."
1 Kings 12:28  After seeking their advice, the king (Jeroboam) made two golden calves. He said to the people, "It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem. Here are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt."

Psalm 97:7  All who worship images are put to shame, those who boast in idols--worship him (the LORD) all you gods!
Isaiah 1:29-31  "You will be ashamed because of the sacred oaks in which you have delighted; you will be disgraced because of the gardens that you have chosen. You will be like an oak with fading leaves, like a garden without water. The mighty man will become tinder and his work a spark; both will be burned together, with no one to quench the fire."

TRUST Isaiah 36:13-15

Then the commander stood and called out in Hebrew, "Hear the words of the great king, the king of Assyria! This is what the king says: Do not let Hezekiah deceive you. He cannot deliver you! Do not let Hezekiah persuade you to trust in the LORD when he says, 'The LORD will surely deliver us; this city will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.' "

Then the commander stood and called out in Hebrew
2 Chronicles 32:18-19  Then they called out in Hebrew to the people of Jerusalem who were on the wall, to terrify them and make them afraid in order to capture the city. They spoke about the God of Jerusalem as they did about the gods of the other peoples of the world--the work of human hands.

Hear the words of the great king, the king of Assyria!
Isaiah 37:1-4  When King Hezekiah heard this, he tore his clothes and put on sackcloth and went into the temple of the LORD. He sent Eliakim the palace administrator, Shebna the secretary, and the leading priests, all wearing sackcloth, to the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz. They told him, "This is what Hezekiah says: This day is a day of distress and rebuke and disgrace, as when children come to the moment of birth and there is no strength to deliver them. It may be that the LORD your God will hear the words of the field commander, whom his master, the king of Assyria, has sent to ridicule the living God, and that he will rebuke him for the words the LORD your God has heard. Therefore pray for the remnant that still survives."

Do not let Hezekiah deceive you
2 Chronicles 32:15  "Now do not let Hezekiah deceive you and mislead you like this. Do not believe him, for no god of any nation or kingdom has been able to deliver his people from my hand or the hand of my predecessors. How much less will your god deliver you from my hand!"

The LORD will surely deliver us
Psalm 3:2-3  Many are saying of me, "God will not deliver him." But you, LORD, are a shield around me, my glory, the One who lifts my head high.
Psalm 3:7  Arise, LORD! Deliver me, my God! Strike all my enemies on the jaw; break the teeth of the wicked.

this city will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria
Isaiah 37:10  "Say to Hezekiah king of Judah: 'Do not let the god you depend on deceive you when he says, 'Jerusalem will not be given into the hands of the king of Assyria.' "

TRUST Isaiah 31:1 Part 2 of 2

Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help, who rely on horses, who trust in the multitude of their chariots and in the great strength of their horsemen, but do not look to the Holy One of Israel, or seek help from the LORD.

who rely on horses
Isaiah 30:16  "You said, 'No, we will flee on horses.' Therefore you will flee! You said, 'We will ride on swift horses.' Therefore your pursuers will be swift!"

who trust in the multitude of their chariots
Isaiah 2:7  Their land is full of silver and gold; there is no end to their treasures. Their land is full of horses; there is no end to their chariots.

but do not look to the Holy One of Israel
Job 6:10  "Then I would still have this consolation--my joy in unrelenting pain--that I had not denied the words of the Holy One."
Isaiah 1:4  Woe to the sinful nation, a people whose guilt is great, a brood of evildoers, children given to corruption! They have forsaken the LORD; they have spurned the Holy One of Israel and turned their backs on him.
Isaiah 30:12-13  Therefore this is what the Holy One of Israel says: "Because you have rejected this message, relied on oppression and depended on deceit, this sin will become for you like a high wall, cracked and bulging, that collapses suddenly in an instant."

or seek help from the LORD
Deuteronomy 20:1  When you go to war against your enemies and see horses and chariots and an army greater than yours, do not be afraid of them, because the LORD your God, who brought you up out of Egypt, will be with you.
Proverbs 21:31  The horse is made ready for the day of battle, but victory rests with the LORD.
Isaiah 9:13  But the people have not returned to him who struck them, nor have they sought the LORD Almighty.
Ezekiel 29:16  " 'Egypt will no longer be a source of confidence for the people of Israel but will be a reminder of their sin in turning to her for help. Then they will know that I am the Sovereign LORD.' "

Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help, who rely on horses, who trust in the multitude of their chariots and in the great strength of their horsemen, but do not look to the Holy One of Israel, or seek help from the LORD.

Woe
Isaiah 28:1  Woe to that wreath (Samaria, capital of the northern kingdom), the pride of Ephraims's drunkards, to the fading flower, his glorious beauty, set on the head of a fertile valley--to that city, the pride of those laid low by wine!

to those who go down to Egypt for help
Deuteronomy 17:16  The king, moreover, must not acquire great numbers of horses for himself or make the people return to Egypt to get more of them, for the LORD has told you, "You are not to go back that way again."
Isaiah 30:1-5  "Woe to the obstinate children," declares the LORD, "to those who carry out plans that are not mine, forming an alliance, but not by my Spirit, heaping sin upon sin; who go down to Egypt without consulting me; who look for help to Pharaoh's protection, to Egypt's shade for refuge. But Pharaoh's protection will be to your shame, Egypt's shade will bring you disgrace. Though they have officials in Zoan and their envoys have arrived in Hanes, everyone will be put to shame because of a people useless to them who bring neither help nor advantage, but only shame and disgrace."
Jeremiah 37:5  Pharaoh's army had marched out of Egypt, and when the Babylonians who were besieging Jerusalem heard the report about them, they withdrew from Jerusalem.

TRUST Isaiah 12:2 Part 1 of 2

"Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid. The LORD, the LORD himself, is my strength and my defense; he has become my salvation."

Surely God is my salvation
Isaiah 17:10-11  You have forgotten God your Savior; you have not remembered the Rock, your fortress. Therefore, though you set out the finest plants and plant imported vines, though on the day you set them out, you make them grow, and on the morning when you plant them you bring them to bud, yet the harvest will be as nothing in the day of disease and incurable pain.
Isaiah 25:9  In that day they will say, "Surely this is our God; we trusted in him and he saved us. This is the LORD, we trusted in him; let us rejoice and be glad in his salvation."
Isaiah 33:6  He will be the sure foundation for your times, a rich store of salvation and wisdom and knowledge; the fear of the LORD is the key to this treasure.
Isaiah 45:17  But Israel will be saved by the LORD with an everlasting salvation; you will never be put to shame or disgraced to ages everlasting.
Isaiah 51:5-6  "My righteousness draws near speedily, my salvation is on the way, and my arm will bring justice to the nations. The islands will look to me and wait in hope for my arm. Lift up your eyes to the heavens, look at the earth beneath; the heavens will vanish like smoke, the earth will wear out like a garment and its inhabitants die like flies. But my salvation will last forever, my righteousness will never fail."
Isaiah 54:8  "In a surge of anger I hid my face from you for a moment, but with everlasting kindness I will have compassion on you," says the LORD your Redeemer.
Isaiah 59:15b-16  The LORD looked and was displeased that there was no justice. He saw that there was no one, he was appalled that there was no one to intervene; so his own arm achieved salvation for him and his own righteousness sustained him.
Isaiah 61:10  I delight greatly in the LORD; my soul rejoices in my God. For he has clothed me with garments of salvation and arrayed me in a robe of his righteousness, as a bridegroom adorns his head like a priest, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.

TRUST Isaiah 8:17

I will wait for the LORD, who is hiding his face from the descendants of Jacob. I will put my trust in him.

I will wait for the LORD
Psalm 27:14  Wait for the LORD; be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD.

who is hiding his face from the descendants of Jacob
Deuteronomy 31:17-18  "And in that day I will become angry with them and forsake them; I will hide my face from them, and they will be destroyed. Many disasters and calamities will come on them, and in that day they will ask, 'Have not these disasters come on us because our God is not with us?' And I will certainly hide my face in that day because of all their wickedness in turning to other gods."

I will put my trust in him
Psalm 22:5  To you they cried out and were saved; in you they trusted and were not put to shame.
Hebrews 2:10-15  In bringing many sons and daughters to glory, it was fitting that God, for whom and through whom everything exists, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through what he suffered. Both the one who makes people holy and those who are made holy are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters. He says, "I will declare your name to my brothers and sisters; in the assembly I will sing your praises." (Psalm 22:22) And again, "I will put my trust in him." (Isaiah 8:17) And again he says, "Here am I, and the children God has given me." (Isaiah 8:18) Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death--that is, the devil--and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.

TRUST Proverbs 28:25-26

The greedy stir up conflict, but those who trust in the LORD will prosper. Those who trust in themselves are fools, but those who walk in wisdom are kept safe.

The greedy stir up conflict
Proverbs 14:17  A quick-tempered person does foolish things, and the one who devises evil schemes is hated.

but those who trust in the LORD will prosper
Proverbs 29:25  Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD is kept safe.

Those who trust in themselves are fools
Psalm 4:4-5  Tremble and do not sin; when you are on your beds, search your hearts and be silent. Offer the sacrifices of the righteous and trust in the LORD.
Proverbs 3:5-6  Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.

but those who walk in wisdom are kept safe
1 Corinthians 3:18-20  Do not deceive yourselves. If any of you think you are wise by the standards of this age, you should become "fools" so that you may become wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God's sight. As it written: "He catches the wise in their craftiness: (Job 5:13); and again, "The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are futile." (Psalm 94:11)

TRUST Proverbs 21:22

One who is wise can go up against the city of the mighty and pull down the stronghold in which they trust.

Proverbs 8:12-16  "I, wisdom, dwell together with prudence; I possess knowledge and discretion. To fear the LORD is to hate evil; I hate pride and arrogance, evil behavior and perverse speech. Counsel and sound judgment are mine; I have insight, I have power. By me kings reign and rulers issue decrees that are just; by me princes govern, and nobles--all who rule on earth."
Ecclesiastes 9:13-16  I also saw under the sun this example of wisdom that greatly impressed me: There was once a small city with only a few people in it. And a powerful king came against it, surrounded it and built huge siege works against it. Now there lived in that city a man poor but wise, and he saved the city by his wisdom. But nobody remembered that poor man. So I said, "Wisdom is better than strength." But the poor man's wisdom is despised, and his words are no longer heeded.
Proverbs 24:5-6  The wise prevail through great power, and those who have knowledge muster their strength. Surely you need guidance to wage war, and victory is won through many advisers.
2 Corinthians 10:3-5  For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

TRUST Proverbs 11:28 Part 2 of 2

Those who trust in their riches will fall, but the righteous will thrive like a green leaf.

but the righteous will thrive like a green leaf
Psalm 52:8  But I am like an olive tree flourishing in the house of God; I trust in God's unfailing love for ever and ever.
Psalm 92:12-15  The righteous will flourish like a palm tree, they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon; planted in the house of the LORD; they will flourish in the courts of our God. They will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green, proclaiming, "The LORD is upright; he is my Rock, and there is no wickedness in him."
Psalm 1:3  That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither--whatever they do prospers.
Jeremiah 17:7-8  "But blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit."

TRUST Proverbs 11:28 Part 1 of 2

Those who trust in their riches will fall, but the righteous will thrive like a green leaf.

Those who trust in their riches will fall
Job 31:24-28  "If I have put my trust in gold or said of pure gold, 'You are my security,' if I have rejoiced over my great wealth, the fortune my hands had gained, if I have regarded the sun in its radiance or the moon moving in splendor, so that my heart was secretly enticed and my hand offered them a kiss of homage, then these also would be sins to be judged, for I would have been unfaithful to God on high."
Psalm 49:5-6  Why should I fear when evil days come, when wicked deceivers surround me--those who trust in their wealth and boast of their great riches?
Psalm 52:6-7  The righteous will see and fear; they will laugh at you saying, "Here now is the man who did not make God his stronghold but trusted in his great wealth and grew strong by destroying others!"
Psalm 62:10  Do not trust in extortion or put vain hope in stolen goods; though your riches increase, do not set your heart on them.
Jeremiah 9:23-24  This is what the LORD says: "Let not the wise boast of their wisdom or the strong boast of their strength or the rich boast of their riches, but let the one who boasts boast of this: that they have the understanding to know me, that I am the LORD, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight," declares the LORD.
Jeremiah 48:7  Since you trust in your deeds and riches, you too will be taken captive, and Chemosh will go into exile, together with his priests and officials.
1 Timothy 6:17  Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.

TRUST Psalm 135:15-18

The idols of the nations are silver and gold, made by human hands. They have mouths, but cannot speak, eyes, but cannot see. They have ears, but cannot hear, nor is there breath in their mouths. Those who make them will be like them, and so will all who trust in them.

The idols of the nations are silver and gold
Psalm 96:5  For all the gods of the nations are idols, but the LORD made the heavens.
Revelation 9:20  The rest of mankind who were not killed by these plagues still did not repent of the work of their hands; they did not stop worshiping demons and idols of gold, silver, bronze, stone and wood--idols that cannot see or hear or walk.

made by human hands
Isaiah 2:8  Their land is full of idols; they bow down to the work of their hands, to what their fingers have made.
Isaiah 31:7  For in that day every one of you will reject the idols of silver and gold your sinful hands have made.
Isaiah 37:19  "They have thrown their gods into the fire and destroyed them, for they were not gods but only wood and stone fashioned by human hands."
Isaiah 40:19  As for an idol, a metalworker casts it, and a goldsmith overlays it with gold and fashions silver chains for it.
Jeremiah 1:16  "I will pronounce my judgments on my people because of their wickedness in forsaking me, in burning incense to other gods and worshiping what their hands have made."
Jeremiah 10:5  "Like a scarecrow in a cucumber field, their idols cannot speak; they must be carried because they cannot walk. Do not fear them; they can do no harm nor can they do any good."

They have mouths, but cannot speak
1 Kings 18:26  So they took the bull given them and prepared it. Then they called on the name of Baal from morning till noon. "Baal, answer us!" they shouted. But there was no response; no one answered. And they danced around the altar they had made.

They have ears, but cannot hear, nor is there breath in their mouths
Jeremiah 10:14  Everyone is senseless and without knowledge; every goldsmith is shamed by his idols. The images he makes are a fraud; they have no breath in them.

TRUST Psalm 125:1

Those who trust in the LORD are like Mount Zion, which cannot be shaken but endures forever.

Those who trust in the LORD are like Mount Zion
Psalm 48:12-14  Walk about Zion, go around her, count her towers, consider well her ramparts, view her citadels, that you may tell of them to the next generation. For this God is our God for ever and ever; he will be our guide even to the end.
Isaiah 33:20-22  Look on Zion, the city of our festivals; your eyes will see Jerusalem, a peaceful abode, a tent that will not be moved; its stakes will never be pulled up, nor any of its ropes broken. There the LORD will be our Mighty One. It will be like a place of broad rivers and streams. No galley with oars will ride them, no mighty ship will sail them. For the LORD is our judge, the LORD is our lawgiver, the LORD is our king; it is he who will save us.

which cannot be shaken but endures forever
Psalm 46:5  God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day.
Psalm 48:2-5  Beautiful in its loftiness, the joy of the whole earth, like the heights of Zaphon is Mount Zion, the city of the Great King. God is in her citadels; he has shown himself to be her fortress. When the kings joined forces, when they advanced together, they saw her and were astounded; they fled in terror.
Psalm 125:2  As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the LORD surrounds his people both now and forevermore.

TRUST Psalm 118:8-9

It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in humans. It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in princes.

It is better to take refuge in the LORD

Isaiah 25:4-5  You have been a refuge for the poor, a refuge for the needy in their distress, a shelter from the storm and a shade from the heat. For the breath of the ruthless is like a storm driving against a wall and like the heat of the desert. You silence the uproar of foreigners; as heat is reduced by the shadow of a cloud, so the song of the ruthless is stilled.
Isaiah 57:13  "When you cry out for help, let your collection of idols save you! The wind will carry all of them off, a mere breath will blow them away. But whoever takes refuge in me will inherit the land and possess my holy mountain."

than to trust in humans
2 Chronicles 32:7-8  "Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or discouraged because of the king of Assyria and the vast army with him, for there is a greater power with us than with him. With him is only the arm of flesh, but with us is the LORD our God to help us and to fight our battles." And the people gained confidence from what Hezekiah the king of Judah said.
Psalm 108:12  Give us aid against the enemy, for human help is worthless.
Isaiah 2:22  Stop trusting in mere humans, who have but a breath in their nostrils. Why hold them in esteem?

than to trust in princes

All you Israelites, trust in the LORD--he is their help and shield. House of Aaron, trust in the LORD--he is their help and shield. You who fear him, trust in the LORD--he is their help and shield.

All you Israelites, trust in the LORD
Psalm 37:3  Trust in the LORD and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.
Psalm 62:8  Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.

House of Aaron

Psalm 118:3  Let the house of Aaron say: "His love endures forever."

You who fear him
Psalm 22:23  You who fear the LORD, praise him! All you descendants of Jacob, honor him! Revere him, all you descendants of Israel.

TRUST Psalm 115:2-8 Part 2 of 2

Why do the nations say, "Where is their God?" Our God is in heaven; he does whatever pleases him. But their idols are silver and gold, made by human hands. They have mouths, but cannot speak, eyes, but cannot see. They have ears, but cannot hear, noses but cannot smell. They have hands, but cannot feel, feet, but cannot walk, nor can they utter a sound with their throats. Those who make them will be like them, and so will all who trust in them.

But their idols are silver and gold
Revelation 9:20  The rest of mankind who were not killed by these plagues still did not repent of the work of their hands; they did not stop worshiping demons, and idols of gold, silver, bronze, stone and wood--idols that cannot see or hear or walk.

made by human hands
2 Kings 19:18  "They (the Assyrian kings) have thrown their gods (of the kingdoms they conquered) into the fire and destroyed them, for they were not gods but only wood and stone, fashioned by human hands."
2 Chronicles 32:19  They (the Assyrians) spoke about the God of Jerusalem as they did about the gods of the other peoples of the world--the work of human hands.
Jeremiah 10:3-5  "For the practices of the peoples are worthless; they cut a tree out of the forest and a craftsman shapes it with his chisel. They adorn it with silver and gold; they fasten it with hammer and nails so it will not totter. Like a scarecrow in a cucumber field, their idols cannot speak; they must be carried because they cannot walk. Do not fear them; they can do no harm nor can they do any good."
Acts 19:25-26  He (Demetrius the silversmith) called them together, along with the workers in related trades, and said: "You know, my friends, that we receive a good income from this business. And you see and hear how this fellow Paul has convinced and led astray large numbers of people here in Ephesus and in practically the whole province of Asia. He says that gods made by human hands are no gods at all."

TRUST Psalm 115:2-8 Part 1 of 2

Why do the nations say, "Where is their God?" Our God is in heaven; he does whatever pleases him. But their idols are silver and gold, made by human hands. They have mouths, but cannot speak, eyes, but cannot see. They have ears, but cannot hear, noses but cannot smell. They have hands, but cannot feel, feet, but cannot walk, nor can they utter a sound with their throats. Those who make them will be like them, and so will all who trust in them.

"Where is their God?"
Psalm 42:3  My tears have been my food day and night, while people say to me all day long, "Where is your God?"

Our God is in heaven
Ezra 5:11  This is the answer they gave us: "We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth, and we are rebuilding the temple that was built many years ago, one that a great king of Israel built and finished."
Nehemiah 1:4  When I heard these things, I sat down and wept. For some days I mourned and fasted and prayed before the God of heaven.
Psalm 103:19  The LORD has established his throne in heaven, and his kingdom rules over all.
Psalm 136:26  Give thanks to the God of heaven. His love endures forever.

TRUST Psalm 91:1-2

Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty (Shaddai). I will say of the LORD, "He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust."

Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High
Exodus 33:22  "When my glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft in the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed by."

will rest in the shadow of the Almighty
Psalm 63:7  Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow of your wings.
Isaiah 49:2  He made my mouth like a sharpened sword, in the shadow of his hand he hid me; he made me into a polished arrow and concealed me in his quiver.
Lamentations 4:20  The LORD's anointed, our very life breath, was caught in their traps. We thought that under his shadow we would live among the nations.

He is my refuge and my fortress
Psalm 91:9-10  If you say, "The LORD is my refuge," and you make the Most High your dwelling, no harm will overtake you, no disaster will come near your tent.
2 Samuel 22:2-3  He (David) said: "The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation. He is my stronghold, my refuge and my savior--from violent people you save me."
Psalm 9:9  The LORD is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble.

TRUST Psalm 78:21-22

When the LORD heard them, he was furious; his fire broke out against Jacob, his wrath rose against Israel, for they did not believe in God or trust in his deliverance.

his fire broke out against Jacob
Numbers 11:1  Now the people complained about their hardships in the hearing of the LORD, and when he heard them his anger was aroused. Then fire from the LORD burned among them and consumed some of the outskirts of the camp.

for they did not believe in God or trust in his deliverance
Deuteronomy 1:32-33  In spite of this, you did not trust in the LORD your God, who went ahead of you on your journey, in fire by night and in a cloud by day, to search out places for you to camp and to show you the way you should go.
Hebrews 2:15-19  As has just been said: "Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion." (Psalm 95:7-8) Who were they who heard and rebelled? Were they not all those Moses led out of Egypt? And with whom was he angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies perished in the wilderness? And to whom did God swear that they would never enter his rest if not to those who disobeyed? So we see that they were not able to enter, because of their unbelief.

TRUST Psalm 78:5-7

He decreed statutes for Jacob and established the law in Israel, which he commanded our ancestors to teach their children, so the next generation would know them, even the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children. Then they would put their trust in God and would not forget his deeds but would keep his commands.

He decreed statutes
Psalm 19:7-9  The law of the LORD is perfect, refreshing the soul. The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy, making wise the simple. The precepts of the LORD are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the LORD are radiant, giving light to the eyes. The fear of the LORD is pure, enduring forever. The decrees of the LORD are firm, and all of them are righteous.

for Jacob
Psalm 147:19-20  He has revealed his word to Jacob, his laws and decrees to Israel. He has done this for no other nation; they do not know his laws. Praise the LORD.

so the next generation would know them, even the children yet to be born
Psalm 22:30-31  Posterity will serve him; future generations will be told about the Lord. They will proclaim his righteousness, declaring to a people yet unborn: He has done it!

Then they would put their trust in God and would not forget his deeds
Deuteronomy 6:12  ... be careful that you do not forget the LORD, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.

but would keep his commands
Deuteronomy 5:28-29  The LORD heard you when you spoke to me (Moses), and the LORD said to me, "I have heard what this people said to you. Everything they said was good. Oh, that their hearts would be inclined to fear me and keep all my commands always, so that it might go well with them and their children forever!"

TRUST Psalm 62:10

Do not trust in extortion or put vain hope in stolen goods; though your riches increase, do not set your heart on them.

Do not trust in extortion
Psalm 12:5  "Because the poor are plundered and the needy groan, I will now arise," says the LORD. "I will protect them from those who malign them."
1 Timothy 6:17  Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.

or put vain hope in stolen goods
Isaiah 61:8  "For I, the LORD, love justice; I hate robbery and wrongdoing. In my faithfulness I will reward my people and make an everlasting covenant with them."
Ezekiel 22:29  "The people of the land practice extortion and commit robbery; they oppress the poor and needy and mistreat the foreigner, denying them justice."
Nahum 3:1  Woe to the city of blood (Nineveh), full of lies, full of plunder, never without victims!

though your riches increase, do not set your heart on them
Job 31:24-25, 28  "If I have put my trust in gold or said to pure gold, 'You are my security,' if I have rejoiced over my great wealth, the fortune my hands had gained, ... then these also would be sins to be judged, for I would have been unfaithful to God on high."
Matthew 19:23-24  Then Jesus said to his disciples, "Truly I tell you, it is hard for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God."
1 Timothy 6:9-10  Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

TRUST Psalm 62:8

Trust him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.

Trust him at all times, you people
Psalm 37:5-6  Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him and he will do this: He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn, your vindication like the noonday sun.
Isaiah 26:4  Trust in the LORD forever, for the LORD, the LORD himself, is the Rock eternal.

pour out your hearts to him
1 Samuel 1:15-16  "Not so, my lord," Hannah replied, "I am a woman who is deeply troubled. I have not been drinking wine or beer; I was pouring out my soul to the LORD. Do not take your servant for a wicked woman; I have been praying here out of my great anguish and grief."
Psalm 42:4  These things I remember as I pour out my soul: how I used to go to the house of God under the protection of the Mighty One with shouts of joy and praise among the festive throng.
Matthew 26:36-41  Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, "Sit here while I go over there and pray." He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. Then he said to them, "My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me." Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, "My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me.
