1 Thessalonians 5:4-6 Part 2 of 2

But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. You are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be awake and sober.

so that this day should surprise you like a thief
1 Thessalonians 5:2  ... for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.

You are all children of the light
Luke 16:8  "The master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly. For the people of this world are more shrewd in dealing with their own kind than are the people of the light."
John 12:35-36  Then Jesus told them, "You are going to have the light just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, before darkness overtakes you. Whoever walks in the dark does not know where they are going. Believe in the light while you have the light, so that you may become children of light." When he had finished speaking, Jesus left and hid himself from them.

So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep
Romans 13:11-12  And do this, understanding the present time: The hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light.

but let us be awake
Matthew 25:13  "Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour."
Matthew 24:42  "Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come."
Matthew 24:44  "So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him."

and sober
Acts 24:25  As Paul talked about righteousness, self-control and the judgment to come, Felix was afraid and said, "That's enough for now! You may leave. When I find it convenient, I will send for you."
1 Peter 4:7  The end of all things is near. Therefore be alert and of sober mind so that you may pray.
1 Peter 5:8  Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.

1 Thessalonians 5:4-6 Part 1 of 2

But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. You are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be awake and sober.

But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness
Acts 26:17-18  " 'I [Jesus] will rescue you [Saul/Paul] from your own people and from the Gentiles. I am sending you to them to open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so that they might receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.' "
Psalm 18:28  You, LORD, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light.
Isaiah 42:6-7  "I, the LORD, have called you in righteousness; I will take hold of your hand. I will keep you and will make you to be a covenant for the people and a light for the Gentiles, to open eyes that are blind, to free captives from prison and to release from the dungeon those who sit in darkness.
Isaiah 42:16  "I will lead the blind by ways they have not known, along unfamiliar paths I will guide them; I will turn the darkness into light before them and make the rough places smooth. These are the things I will do; I will not forsake them."
Ephesians 5:8-10  For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord.
Colossians 1:13-14  For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
1 John 2:8  Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and in you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining.

1 Thessalonians 5:1-3 Part 3 of 3

Now, brothers and sisters, about times and dates we do not need to write to you, for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. While people are saying, "Peace and safety," destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.

destruction will come on them suddenly
Job 15:21  "Terrifying sounds fill his ears; when all seems well, marauders attack him."
Psalm 35:7-8  Since they hid their net for me without cause and without cause dug a pit for me, may ruin overtake them by surprise--may the net they hid entangle them, may they fall into the pit, to their ruin.
Psalm 55:15  Let death take my enemies by surprise; let them go down alive to the realm of the dead, for evil finds lodging among them.
Isaiah 29:5-6  But your many enemies will become like fine dust, the ruthless hordes like blown chaff. Suddenly, in an instant, the LORD Almighty will come with thunder and earthquake and great noise, with windstorm and tempest and flames of a devouring fire.
Isaiah 47:9-11  "Both of these will overtake you in a moment, on a single day: loss of children and widowhood. They will come upon you in full measure, in spite of your many sorceries and all your potent spells. You have trusted in your wickedness and have said, 'No one sees me.' Your wisdom and knowledge mislead you when you say to yourself, 'I am, and there is none besides me.' Disaster will come upon you, and you will not know how to conjure it away. A calamity will fall upon you that you cannot ward off with a ransom; a catastrophe you cannot foresee will suddenly come upon you."

and they will not escape
2 Thessalonians 1:8-10  He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. They will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might on the day he comes to be glorified in his holy people and to be marveled at among all those who have believed. This includes you, because you believed our testimony to you.

will come like a thief in the night
Luke 12:39-40  "But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him."
Matthew 24:42  "Therefore, keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come."
Matthew 25:13  "Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour."

While people are saying, "Peace and safety,"
Jeremiah 4:10  Then I said, "Alas, Sovereign LORD! How completely you have deceived this people and Jerusalem by saying, 'You will have peace,' when the sword is at our throats!"
Jeremiah 6:14  "They dress the wound of my people as though it were not serious. 'Peace, peace,' they say, when there is no peace."
Ezekiel 13:10-11  " 'Because they lead my people astray, saying, "Peace," when there is no peace, and because, when a flimsy wall is built, they cover it with whitewash, therefore tell those who cover it with whitewash that it is going to fall. Rain will come in torrents, and I will send hailstones hurtling down, and violent winds will burst forth.' "

about times and dates
Acts 1:7  He said to them: "It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority."

Matthew 24:36  "But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father."

we do not need to write to you
1 Thessalonians 4:9  Now about your love for one another we do not need to write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love each other.

Joel 2:31  The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD.
Zephaniah 1:14  The great day of the LORD is near--near and coming quickly. The cry on the day of the LORD is bitter; the Mighty Warrior shouts his battle cry.

1 Thessalonians 4:15-18 Part 3 of 3

According to the Lord's word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. Therefore encourage one another with these words.

and the dead in Christ will rise first
1 Corinthians 15:22-23  For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive. But each in turn: Christ, the firstfruits; then, when he comes, those who belong to him.
Mark 13:27  "And he will send his angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of the heavens."
Revelation 14:13  Then I heard a voice from heaven say, "Write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on."  "Yes," says the Spirit, "they will rest from their labor, for their deeds will follow them."

After that, we who are still alive and are left
1 Corinthians 15:52  --in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.

will be caught up together with them in the clouds
Acts 1:9  After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight.
Revelation 11:11-12  But after three and a half days the breath of life from God entered them, and they stood on their feet, and terror struck those who saw them. Then they heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them, "Come up here." And they went up to heaven in a cloud, while their enemies looked on.

and so we will be with the Lord forever
John 12:26  "Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me."
John 17:24  "Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world."

Therefore encourage one another with these words
1 Thessalonians 5:11  Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.

Daniel 12:1  "At that time Michael, the great prince who protects your people will arise. There will be a time of distress such as has not happened from the beginning of nations until then. But at that time your people--everyone whose name is written in the book--will be delivered."
Revelation 12:7  Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back.

Revelation 11:15  The seventh angel sounded his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, which said: "The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Messiah, and he will reign for ever and ever."

Therefore encourage one another with these words.

we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord
1 Corinthians 1:7  Therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed.
Matthew 16:27  "For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father's glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done."
James 5:7-8  Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord's coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains. You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord's coming is near.
1 Peter 1:13  Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming.

will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep
1 Corinthians 15:51-52  Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed--in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.

For the Lord himself will come down from heaven
Matthew 16:27  "For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father's glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done."
John 14:3  "And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am."
Acts 1:11  "Men of Galilee," they said, "why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven."
Revelation 22:7  "Look, I am coming soon! Blessed is the one who keeps the words of the prophecy written in this scroll."

1 Thessalonians 4:13-14 Part 3 of 3

Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.

For we believe that Jesus died and rose again
Romans 14:9  For this very reason, Christ died and returned to life so that he might be the Lord of both the dead and the living.
Revelation 1:18  "I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades."
Revelation 2:8  "To the angel of the church in Smyrna write: These are the words of him who is the First and the Last, who died and came to life again."
1 Corinthians 15:3-5  For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised from the dead on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, and then to the Twelve.
2 Corinthians 5:15  And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again.

and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him
1 Corinthians 6:14  By his power God raised the Lord from the dead, and he will raise us also.
2 Corinthians 4:14  ... because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus from the dead will also raise us with Jesus and present us with you to himself.
Romans 6:3-5  Or don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his.

1 Thessalonians 4:13-14 Part 2 of 3

Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.

about those who sleep in death
Acts 7:60  Then he [Stephen] fell on his knees and cried out, "Lord, do not hold this sin against them." When he had said this, he fell asleep.
Acts 13:36  "Now when David had served God's purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep; he was buried with his ancestors and his body decayed."
1 Corinthians 11:30  That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep.
1 Corinthians 15:6  After that, he [Jesus] appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers and sisters at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep.
1 Corinthians 15:17-20  And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. Then those who have fallen asleep in Christ are lost. If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied. But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.
1 Thessalonians 4:15-16  According to the Lord's word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.

so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope
Ephesians 2:11-12  Therefore, remember that formerly you who are Gentiles by birth and called "uncircumcised" by those who call themselves "the circumcision" (which is done in the body by human hands)--remember that at that time you were separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel and foreigners to the covenants of the promise, without hope and without God in the world.

1 Thessalonians 4:13-14 Part 1 of 3

Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.

we do not want you to be uninformed
Romans 11:25-27  I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers and sisters, so that you may not be conceited: Israel has experienced a hardening in part until the full number of the Gentiles has come in, and in this way all Israel will be saved. As it is written: "The deliverer will come from Zion; he will turn godlessness away from Jacob. And this is my covenant with them when I take away their sins." [Isaiah 59:20-21; 27:9; Jeremiah 31:33-34]
Romans 1:13  I do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, that I planned many times to come to you (but have been prevented from doing so until now) in order that I might have a harvest among you, just as I have had among the other Gentiles.
1 Corinthians 10:1  For I do not want you to be ignorant of the fact, brothers and sisters, that our ancestors were all under the cloud [Exodus 13:21] and that they all passed through the sea. [Exodus 14:22, 29]
1 Corinthians 12:1  Now about the gifts of the Spirit, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed.
2 Corinthians 1:8  We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, about the troubles we experienced in the province of Asia. We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired of life itself.

about those who sleep in death
Matthew 9:23-24  When Jesus entered the synagogue leader's house and saw the noisy crowd and people playing pipes, he said, " Go away. The girl is not dead but asleep." But they laughed at him.
Daniel 12:2  "Multitudes who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake: some to everlasting life, others to shame and everlasting contempt."
Psalm 76:5  The valiant lie plundered, they sleep their last sleep; not one of the warriors can lift his hands.
John 11:11-12  After he had said this he went on to tell them, "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I am going there to wake him up." [see verses 13-14]

1 Thessalonians 4:9-12 Part 4 of 4

Now about your love for one another we do not need to write you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love each other. And in fact, you do love all of God's family throughout Macedonia. Yet we urge you, brothers and sisters, to do so more and more, and to make it your ambition to lead a quiet life: You should mind your own business and work with your hands, just as we told you, so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody.

Yet we urge you, brothers and sisters, to do so more and more
1 Thessalonians 3:12  May the Lord make your love increase and overflow for each other and for everyone else, just as ours does for you.
Philippians 1:9-11  And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ--to the glory and praise of God.
2 Thessalonians 1:3  We ought always to thank God for you, brothers and sisters, and rightly so, because your faith is growing more and more, and the love all of you have for one another is increasing.

You should mind your own business and work with your hands
Ephesians 4:28  Anyone who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with their own hands, that they may have something to share with those in need.
2 Thessalonians 3:10-12  For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: "The one who is unwilling to work shall not eat." We hear that some among you are idle and disruptive. They are not busy; they are busybodies. Such people we command and urge in the Lord Jesus Christ to settle down and earn the food they eat.

so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders
Colossians 4:5  Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity.
1 Timothy 3:7  He (the overseer) must also have a good reputation with outsiders, so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the devil's trap.

to love each other

1 Thessalonians 4:9-12 Part 2 of 4

Now about your love for one another we do not need to write you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love each other. And in fact, you do love all of God's family throughout Macedonia. Yet we urge you, brothers and sisters, to do so more and more, and to make it your ambition to lead a quiet life: You should mind your own business and work with your hands, just as we told you, so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody.

we do not need to write to you
1 Thessalonians 5:1-2  Now, brothers and sisters, about times and dates we do not need to write to you, for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.

for you yourselves have been taught by God
John 6:45  "It is written in the Prophets: 'They will all be taught by God.' (Isaiah 54:13) Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from him comes to me."
Isaiah 54:13  "All your children will be taught by the LORD, and great will be their peace."
Jeremiah 31:33-34  "This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel after that time," declares the LORD. "I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. No longer will they teach their neighbor, or say to one another, 'Know the LORD,' because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest," declares the LORD. "For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more."
1 Corinthians 2:13  This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words.
Hebrews 8:10-11  "This is the covenant I will establish with the people of Israel after that time, declares the Lord. I will put my laws in their minds and write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. No longer will they teach their neighbor, or say to one another, 'Know the Lord,' because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest."
Hebrews 10:16  "This is the covenant I will make with them after that time, says the Lord. I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds."
1 John 2:27  As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit--just as it has taught you, remain in him.

1 Thessalonians 4:9-12 Part 1 of 4

Now about your love for one another we do not need to write you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love each other. And in fact, you do love all of God's family throughout Macedonia. Yet we urge you, brothers and sisters, to do so more and more, and to make it your ambition to lead a quiet life: You should mind your own business and work with your hands, just as we told you, so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody.

Now about your love for one another

John 15:12  "My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you."
Ephesians 5:1-2  Follow God's example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
1 John 4:10-11  This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.

1 Thessalonians 4:7-8

For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life. Therefore, anyone who rejects this instruction does not reject a human being but God, the very God who gives you his Holy Spirit.

For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life
Leviticus 11:44-45  " 'I am the LORD your God; consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am holy. Do not make yourselves unclean by any creature that moves along the ground. I am the LORD, who brought you up out of Egypt to be your God; therefore be holy, because I am holy.' "
1 Peter 1:15-16  But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: "Be holy, because I am holy." (Leviticus 11:44-45; 19:2)

anyone who rejects this instruction does not reject a human being but God, the very God who gives you his Holy Spirit
Ezekiel 36:27  " 'And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws.' "
Romans 5:5  And hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.
2 Corinthians 1:21-22  Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.
Galatians 4:6  Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, "Abba, Father."
1 John 3:24  The one who keeps God's commands lives in him, and he in them. This is how we know that he lives in us: we know it by the Spirit he gave us.
