Jesus looked at him and loved him. "One thing you lack," he said.
"Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have
treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."
At this the man's face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth.
Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, "How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!"
The
disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said again, "Children,
how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to
go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the
kingdom of God."
At this the man's face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth.
Matthew 19:22
When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth.
Luke 18:23
When he heard this, he became very sad, because he was very wealthy.
Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, "How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!"
Matthew 19:23
Then Jesus said to his disciples, "Truly I tell you, it is hard for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of heaven."
Luke 18:24
Jesus looked at him and said, "How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!"
Psalm 62:10
Do not trust in extortion
or put vain hope in stolen goods;
though your riches increase,
do not set your heart on them. (see all Psalm 62)
Mark 4:18-19
"Still others, like seed sown among thorns, hear the word; but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful." (see Mark 4:2-20)
1 Timothy 6:9-10
Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.
(see 1 Timothy 6:3-10)
1 Timothy 6:17
Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. (see 1 Timothy 6:17-19)
