What shall we say, then? Is the law sinful? Certainly not! Nevertheless, I would not have known what sin was had it not been for the law. For I would not have known what coveting really was if the law had not said, "You shall not covet." But sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment, produced in me every kind of coveting. For apart from the law, sin was dead.
What shall we say, then?
Romans 8:31 What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?
Is the law sinful? Certainly not!
Romans 7:12-13 So then, the law is holy and the commandment is holy, righteous and good. Did that which is good, then, become death to me? By no means! Nevertheless, in order that sin might be recognized as sin, it used what is good to bring about my death, so that through the commandment sin might become utterly sinful.
Nevertheless, I would not have known what sin was had it not been for the law
Romans 4:14-15 For if those who depend on the law are heirs, faith means nothing and the promise is worthless, because the law brings wrath.
Romans 3:20 Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God's sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin.
Romans 5:13 To be sure, sin was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not charged against anyone's account where there is no law.
You shall not covet
Exodus 20:17 "You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor."
Deuteronomy 5:21 "You shall not covet your neighbor's wife. You shall not set your desire on your neighbor's house or land, his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor."
But sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment
Romans 7:11 For sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment, deceived me, and through the commandment put me to death.
For apart from the law, sin was dead
Romans 4:15b And when there is no law there is no transgression.
