Psalm 63 Title and verses1-2
Title: A psalm of David. When he was in the Desert of Judah
2 Samuel 15:23-28 The whole countryside wept aloud as all the people passed by. The king also crossed the Kidron Valley, and all the people moved on toward the wilderness. Zadok was there, too, and all the Levites who were with him were carrying the ark of the covenant of God. They set down the ark of God, and Abiathar offered sacrifices until all the people had finished leaving the city. Then the king said to Zadok, "Take the ark of God back into the city. If I find favor in the LORD's eyes, he will bring me back and let me see it and his dwelling place again. but if he says, 'I am not pleased with you,' then I am ready; let him do to me whatever seems good to him." The king also said to Zadok the priest, "Do you understand? Go back to the city with my blessing. Take your son Ahimaaz with you, and also Abiathar's son Jonathan. You and Abiathar return with your two sons. I will wait at the fords in the wilderness until word comes from you to inform me."
Verses 1-2
You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you. I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water. I have seen you in the sanctuary and beheld your power and your glory.
I thirst for you
Psalm 42:2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?
Psalm 84:2 My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the LORD; my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God.
my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water
Psalm 143:6 I spread out my hands to you; I thirst for you like a parched land.
I have seen you in the sanctuary
Psalm 15:1 LORD, who may dwell in your sacred tent? Who may live on your holy mountain?
Psalm 27:4 One thing I ask of the LORD, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the LORD and to seek him in his temple.
Psalm 68:24 Your procession, God, has come into view, the procession of my God and King into the sanctuary.
and beheld your power and your glory
Deuteronomy 5:24 And you said, "The LORD our God has shown us his glory and his majesty, and we have heard his voice from the fire. Today we have seen that a person can live even if God speaks with them."

One thing God has spoken, two things I have heard: "Power belongs to you, God, and with you, Lord, is unfailing love"; and, "You reward everyone according to what they have done."

Psalm 62:9-10
Surely the lowborn are but a breath, the highborn are but a lie. If weighed on a balance they are nothing; together they are only a breath. Do not trust in extortion or put vain hope in stolen goods; though your riches increase, do not set your heart on them.
Surely the lowborn are but a breath
Job 7:7 "Remember, O God, that my life is but a breath; my eyes will never see happiness again."
If weighed on a balance they are nothing
Isaiah 40:15 Surely the nations are like a drop in a bucket; they are regarded as dust on the scales; he weighs the islands as though they were fine dust.
Do not trust in extortion
Psalm 12:5 "Because the poor are plundered and the needy groan, I will now arise," says the LORD. "I will protect them from those who malign them."
1 Timothy 6:17 Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.
or put vain hope in stolen goods
Isaiah 61:8 "For I, the LORD, love justice; I hate robbery and wrongdoing. In my faithfulness I will reward my people and make an everlasting covenant with them."
Ezekiel 22:29 "The people of the land practice extortion and commit robbery; they oppress the poor and needy and mistreat the foreigner, denying them justice."
though your riches increase, do not set your heart on them
Matthew 19:23-24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, "Truly I tell you, it is hard for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God."
1 Timothy 6:6-10 But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

Psalm 62:5-8
Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him. Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken. My salvation and my honor depend on God; he is my mighty rock, my refuge. Trust him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.

Psalm 37:5-6 Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him and he will do this: He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn, your vindication like the noonday sun.
Isaiah 26:4 Trust in the LORD forever, for the LORD, the LORD himself, is the Rock eternal.
pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge
1 Samuel 1:15 "Not so, my lord," Hannah replied, "I am a woman who is deeply troubled. I have not been drinking wine or beer; I was pouring out my soul to the LORD."
Psalm 42:4 These things I remember as I pour out my soul: how I used to go to the house of God under the protection of the Mighty One with shouts of joy and praise among the festive throng.
Matthew 26:37-40 (see verses 36-46) He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. Then he said to them, "My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me." Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, "My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will." Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. "Couldn't you men keep watch with me for one hour?" he asked Peter.

Psalm 62:3-4
How long will you assault me? Would all of you throw me down--this leaning wall, this tottering fence? Surely they intend to topple me from my lofty place; they take delight in lies. With their mouths they bless, but in their hearts they curse.
Would all of you throw me down--this leaning wall, this tottering fence?
Isaiah 30:12-14 Therefore this is what the Holy One of Israel says: "Because you have rejected this message, relied on oppression and depended on deceit, this sin will become for you like a high wall, cracked and bulging, that collapses suddenly, in an instant. It will break in pieces like pottery, shattered so mercilessly that among its pieces not a fragment will be found for taking coals from a hearth or scooping water out of a cistern."
With their mouths they bless, but in their hearts they curse
Psalm 28:3 Do not drag me away with the wicked, with those who do evil, who speak cordially with their neighbors but harbor malice in their hearts.
Psalm 55:21 His talk is smooth as butter, yet war is in his heart; his words are more soothing than oil, yet they are drawn swords.

Psalm 60:6-8
God has spoken from his sanctuary: "In triumph I will parcel out Shechem and measure off the Valley of Sukkoth. Gilead is mine, and Manasseh is mine; Ephraim is my helmet, Judah is my scepter. Moab is my washbasin, on Edom I toss my sandal; over Philistia I shout in triumph."
In triumph I will parcel out Shechem
Genesis 12:6 Abram traveled through the land as far as the site of the great tree of Moreh at Shechem. At that time the Canaanites were in the land.
Joshua 24:1 Then Joshua assembled all the tribes of Israel at Shechem. He summoned the elders, leaders, judges and officials of Israel, and they presented themselves before God.
1 Kings 12:1 Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had gone there to make him king.
and measure off the Valley of Sukkoth
Genesis 33:17 Jacob, however, went to Sukkoth, where he built a place for himself and made shelters for his livestock. That is why the place is called Sukkoth [shelters].
Gilead is mine and Manasseh is mine
Joshua 13:30-31 The territory extending form Mahanaim and including all of Bashan, the entire realm of Og king of Bashan--all the settlements of Jair in Bashan, sixty towns, half of Gilead and Ashtaroth and Edrei (the royal cities of Og in Bashan). This was for the descendants of Makir son of Manasseh--for half the sons of Makir, according to their clans.
Ephraim is my helmet
Genesis 33:17 "In majesty he [Joseph] is like a firstborn bull; his horns are the horns of a wild ox. With them he will gore the nations, even those at the ends of the earth. Such are the ten thousands of Ephraim; such are the thousands of Manasseh."
Judah is my scepter
Genesis 29:35 She [Leah] conceived again, and when she gave birth to a son she said, "This time I will praise the LORD." So she named him Judah [praise]. Then she stopped having children.
Deuteronomy 33:7 And this he [Moses] said about Judah: "Hear, LORD, the cry of Judah; bring him to his people. With his own hands he defends his cause. Oh, be his help against his foes!"
Genesis 49:10 "The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler's staff from between his feet, until he to whom it belongs shall come and the obedience of the nations will be his."
over Philistia I shout in triumph
2 Samuel 8:1 In the course of time, David defeated the Philistines and subdued them, and he took Metheg Ammah from the control of the Philistines.

Psalm 60:4-5
But for those who fear you, you have raised a banner to be unfurled against the bow. Save us and help us with your right hand, that those you love may be delivered.
But for those who fear you, you have raised a banner
Isaiah 5:26 He lifts up a banner for the distant nations, he whistles for those at the ends of the earth. Here they come, swiftly and speedily!

He will raise a banner for the nations and gather the exiles of Israel; he will assemble the scattered people of Judah from the four quarters of the earth.
Isaiah 18:3 All you people of the world, you who live on the earth, when a banner is raised on the mountains you will see it, and when a trumpet sounds you will hear it.
Save us and help us with your right hand
Psalm 18:35 You make your saving help my shield, and your right hand sustains me; your help has made me great.

Isaiah 41:10 "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."
that those you love may be delivered
Deuteronomy 33:12 About Benjamin he (Moses) said: "Let the beloved of the LORD rest secure in him, for he shields him all day long, and the one the LORD loves rests between his shoulders."

of your strength

Psalm 59:12-13
For the sins of their mouths, for the words of their lips, let them be caught in their pride. For the curses and lies they utter, consume them in their wrath, consume them till they are no more. Then it will be known to the ends of the earth that God rules over Jacob.
For the sins of their mouths

for the words of their lips
Psalm 64:8 He will turn their own tongues against them and bring them to ruin; all who see them will shake their heads in scorn.
Proverbs 10:14 The wise store up knowledge, but the mouth of a fool invites ruin.
Proverbs 12:13 Evildoers are trapped by their sinful talk, and so the innocent escape trouble.
let them be caught in their pride
Isaiah 2:12 The LORD Almighty has a day in store for all the proud and lofty, for all that is exalted (and they will be humbled), ...
Isaiah 5:15 So people will be brought low and everyone humbled.
Zephaniah 3:11 "On that day you, Jerusalem, will not be put to shame for all the wrongs you have done to me, because I will remove from you your arrogant boasters. Never again will you be haughty on my holy hill."
consume them till they are no more
Psalm 104:35 But may sinners vanish from the earth and the wicked be no more. Praise the LORD, my soul. Praise the LORD.
Then it will be known to the ends of the earth that God rules over Jacob.
Psalm 83:18 Let them know that you, whose name is the LORD--that you alone are the Most High over all the earth.
