Slaves, in reverent fear of God submit yourselves to your masters, not only to those who are good and considerate, but also to those who are harsh. For it is commendable if someone bears up under the pain of unjust suffering because they are conscious of God. But how is it to your credit if you receive a beating for doing wrong and endure it? But if you suffer for doing good and you endure it, this is commendable before God.

It teaches us to say "No" to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, while we wait for the blessed hope--the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.
1 Peter 3:15-16 But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
But you are a chosen people
Deuteronomy 10:15 Yet the LORD set his affection on your ancestors and loved them, and he chose you, their descendants, above all the nations--as it is today.
1 Samuel 12:22 "For the sake of his great name the LORD will not reject his people, because the LORD was pleased to make you his own."

For in
Scripture it says: "See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious
cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame."
Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not
believe, "The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,"
and, "A stone that causes people to stumble and a rock that makes them
fall." They stumble because they disobey the message--which is also what
they were destined for.

Luke 2:34-35 Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother: "This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too."
They stumble because they disobey the message--which is also what they were destined for
Romans 9:22 What if God, although choosing to show his wrath and make his power known, bore with great patience the objects of his wrath--prepared for destruction?
Romans 2:4 Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, forbearance and patience, not realizing that God's kindness is intended to lead you to repentance?

Now that you
have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere
love for each other, love one another deeply from the heart. For you
have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable,
through the living and enduring word of God. For, "All people are like
grass, and their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass
withers and the flowers fall, but the word of the Lord endures forever."

1 Peter 1:10-12 Part 3 of 3
Concerning this
salvation, the prophets, who spoke of the grace that was to come to
you, searched intently and with the greatest care, trying to find out
the time and circumstances to which the Spirit of Christ in them was
pointing when he predicted the sufferings of the Messiah and the glories
that would follow. It was revealed to them that they were not serving
themselves but you, when they spoke of the things that have now been
told you by those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit
sent from heaven. Even angels long to look into these things.
