Ruth 3:1-2

One day Ruth's mother-in-law Naomi said to her, "My daughter, I must find a home for you, where you will be well provided for. Now Boaz, with whose women you have worked, is a relative of ours. Tonight he will be winnowing barley on the threshing floor.

 

One day Ruth's mother-in-law Naomi

Ruth 1:14  At this they wept aloud again. Then Orpah kissed her mother-in-law goodbye, but Ruth clung to her.

said to her, "My daughter, I must find a home for you, where you will be well provided for 

Ruth 1:9  "May the LORD grant that each of you will find rest in the home of another husband." Then she kissed them goodbye and they wept aloud ...

Now Boaz, with whose women you have worked, is a relative of ours 

Ruth 2:1  Now Naomi had a relative on her husband's side, a man of standing from the clan of Elimelek, whose name was Boaz.

Proverbs 7:4  Say to wisdom, "You are my sister," and to insight, "You are my relative." 

 

Tonight he will be winnowing barley on the threshing floor 

Leviticus 2:14  " 'If you bring a grain offering of firstfruits to the LORD, offer crushed heads of new grain roasted in the fire.' "

Exodus 34:22  "Celebrate the Festival of Weeks with the firstfruits of the wheat harvest, and the Festival of Ingathering at the turn of the  year."

Numbers 15:20  " 'Present a loaf from the first of your ground meal and present it as an offering from the threshing floor.' "

Numbers 28:26  " 'On the day of firstfruits, when you present to the LORD an offering of new grain during the Festival of Weeks, hold a sacred assembly and do no regular work.' "

Deuteronomy 16:13  Celebrate the Festival of Tabernacles for seven days after you have gathered the produce of your threshing floor and your winepress.

Genesis 50:10  When they reached the threshing floor of Atad, near the Jordan, they lamented loudly and bitterly; and there Joseph observed a seven-day period of mourning for his father.

1 Samuel 23:1-2  When David was told, "Look, the Philistines are fighting against Keilah and are looting the threshing floors," He inquired of the LORD, saying, "Shall I go attack these Philistines?" The LORD answered him, "Go, attack the Philistines and save Keilah."

Ruth 3:6  So she went down to the threshing floor and did everything her mother-in-law told her to do.

Ruth 2:21-23

Then Ruth the Moabite said, "He even said to me, 'Stay with my workers until they finish harvesting all my grain.' " Naomi said to Ruth her daughter-in-law, "It will be good for you, my daughter, to go with the women who work for him, because in someone else's field you might be harmed." So Ruth stayed close to the women of Boaz to glean until the barley and wheat harvests were finished. And she lived with her mother-in-law.

 

Then Ruth the Moabite

Ruth 1:22  So Naomi returned from Moab accompanied by Ruth the Moabite, her daughter-in-law, arriving in Bethlehem as the barley harvest was beginning.  

 

So Ruth stayed close to the women of Boaz to glean until the barley and wheat harvests were finished 

Exodus 9:31-32  (The flax and barley were destroyed [by the plague of hail] since the barley had headed and the flax was in bloom. The wheat and spelt, however, were not destroyed, because they ripen later.)

Exodus 34:22  "Celebrate the Festival of Weeks with the firstfruits of the wheat harvest, and the Festival of Ingathering at the turn of the year." 

1 Samuel 6:13  Now the people of Beth Shemesh were harvesting their wheat in the valley, and when they looked up and saw the ark, they rejoiced at the sight. [the Ark of the Covenant Law, the Ark of the LORD had been captured by the Philistines who were now returning it]

1 Samuel 12:16-17  "Now then, stand still and see this great thing the LORD is about to do before your eyes! Is it not the wheat harvest now? I will call on the LORD to send thunder and rain. And you will realize what a  evil thing you did in the eyes of the LORD when you asked for a king."

2 Samuel 14:30  Then he said to his servants, "Look, Joab's field is next to mine, and he has barley there. Go and set it on fire." So Absalom's servants set the field on fire.

Ezekiel 4:9  "Take wheat and barley, beans and lentils, millet and spelt; put them in a storage jar and use them to make bread for yourself. You are to eat it during the 390 days you lie on your side."

Joel 1:4, 10-11  What the locust swarm has left the great locusts have eaten; what the great locusts have left the young locusts have eaten; what the young locusts have left the other locusts have eaten. ... The fields are ruined, the ground is dried up; the grain is destroyed, the new wine is dried up, the olive oil fails. Despair you farmers, wail you vine growers; grieve for the wheat and the barely, because the harvest of the field is destroyed.

Ruth 2:17-20

So Ruth gleaned in the field until evening. Then she threshed the barley she had gathered, and it amounted to about an ephah. (about 30 pounds or 13 Kilograms) She carried it back to town and her mother-in-law saw how much she had gathered. Ruth also brought out and gave her what she had left over after she had eaten enough. Her mother-in-law asked her, "Where did you glean today? Where did you work? Blessed be the man who took notice of you!" Then Ruth told her mother-in-law about the one at whose place she had been working. "The name of the man I worked with today is Boaz," she said. "The LORD bless him!" Naomi said to her daughter-in-law. "He has not stopped showing his kindness to the living and dead." She added, "That man is our close relative; he is one of our guardian-redeemers."

 

She threshed the barley she had gathered

Judges 6:11  The angel of the LORD came and sat down under the oak at Ophrah that belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, where his son Gideon was threshing wheat in a winepress to keep it from the Midianites.

 

and it amounted to about an ephah 

Leviticus 19:36  " 'Use honest scales and honest weights, an honest ephah and an honest hin. I am the LORD  your God, who brought you out of Egypt.' " (an ephah is about 3/5 of a bushel or 22 liters dry; a hin is about 1 gallon or 3.8 liters liquid) 

 

The LORD bless him! 

Ruth 3:10  "The LORD bless you, my daughter," he replied. "This kindness is greater than that which you showed earlier: You have not run after younger men, whether rich or poor." 

1 Samuel 15:13  When Samuel reached him, Saul said, "The LORD bless you! I have carried out the LORD's instructions."

1 Samuel 23:21  Saul replied, "The LORD bless you for your concern for me."

2 Samuel 2:5  ..."The LORD bless you for showing this kindness to Saul your master by burying him."

That man is a close relative 

Leviticus 25:25  " 'If one of your fellow Israelites becomes poor and sells some of their property, their nearest relative is to come and redeem what they have sold.' "

Jeremiah 32:7  "Hanamel son of Shallum your uncle is going to come to you and say, 'Buy my field at Anathoth, because as nearest relative it is your right and duty to buy it.' "

he is one of our guardian-redeemers 

Ruth 3:9  "Who are you?" he asked. "I am your servant Ruth," she said. "Spread the corner of your garment over me, since you are a guardian-redeemer of our family."

Ruth 3:12  "Although it is true that I am a guardian-redeemer of our family, there is another who is more closely related than I."

Ruth 4:1  Meanwhile Boaz went up to the town gate and sat down there just as the guardian-redeemer he had mentioned came along. Boaz said, "Come over here, my friend and sit down." So he went over and sat down.

Ruth 2:13-16

"May I continue to find favor in your eyes, my lord," she said. "You have put me at ease by speaking kindly to your servant--though I do not have the standing of one of your servants." At mealtime Boaz said to her, "Come over here. Have some bread and dip it in the wine vinegar." When she sat down with the harvesters, he offered her some roasted grain. She ate all she wanted and had some left over. As she got up to glean, Boaz gave orders to his men, "Let her gather among the sheaves and don't reprimand her. Even pull our some stalks for her from the bundles and leave them for her to pick up, and don't rebuke her."

 

May I continue to find favor in your eyes, my lord

Genesis 18:3  He said, "If I have found favor in your eyes, my lord, do not pass your servant by."  

Ruth 2:2  And Ruth the Moabite said to Naomi, "Let me go to the fields and pick up the leftover grain behind anyone in whose eyes I find favor."

Ruth 2:10  At this she bowed down with her face to the ground. She asked him, "Why have I found such favor in your eyes that you would notice me--a foreigner?" 

Esther 2:15  When the turn came for Esther (the young woman Mordecai had adopted, the daughter of his uncle Abihail) to go to the king, she asked for nothing other than what Hegai, the king's eunuch who was in charge of the harem suggested. And Esther won the favor of everyone who saw her.

Esther 2:17  Now the king was attracted to Esther more than to any of the other women, and she won his favor and approval more than any of the other virgins. So he set a royal crown on her head and made her queen instead of Vashti.

Esther 5:8  "If the king regards me with favor and if it pleases the king to grant my petition and fulfill my request, let the king and Haman come tomorrow to the banquet I will prepare for them. Then I will answer the king's question."

Esther 7:3  Then Queen Esther answered, "If I have found favor with you, Your Majesty, and if it pleases you, grant me my life--this is my petition. And spare my people--this is my request."

Have some bread and dip it in the wine vinegar 

Genesis 14:18a  Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine.

Ruth 1:6  When Naomi heard in Moab that the LORD had come to the aid of his people by providing food for them, she and her daughters-in-law prepared to return home from there.

When she sat down with the harvesters, he offered her some roasted grain 

Joshua 5:11  The day after the Passover, that very day, they ate some of the produce of the land: unleavened bread and roasted grain.

She ate all she wanted and had some left over

Boaz replied, "I've been told all about what you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of your husband--how you left your father and mother and your homeland and came to live with a people you did not know before. May the LORD repay you for what you have done. May you be richly rewarded by the LORD, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge."

Isaiah 55:5  "Surely you will summon nations you know not, and nations you do not know will come running to you, because of the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, for he has endowed you with splendor."

Ruth 1:16-17  But Ruth replied, "Don't urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May the LORD deal with me, be it ever so severely, if even death separates you and me."

May you be richly rewarded by the LORD 

1 Samuel 24:19  "When a man finds his enemy, does he let him get away unharmed? May the LORD reward you well for the way you treated me today."

1 Samuel 26:23-25  "The LORD rewards everyone for their righteousness and faithfulness. The LORD delivered you into my hands today, but I would not lay a hand on the LORD's anointed. Ruth 2:8-10

So Boaz said to Ruth, "My daughter, listen to me. Don't go and glean in another field and don't go away from here. Stay here with the women who work for me. Watch the field where the men are harvesting, and follow along after the women. I have told the men not to lay a hand on you. And whenever you are thirsty, go and get a drink from the water jars the man have filled." At this she bowed down with her face to the ground. She asked him, "Why have I found such favor in your eyes that you notice me--a foreigner?"

Why have I found such favor in your eyes that you notice me 

Ruth 2:19  Her mother-in-law asked her, "Where did you glean today? Where did you work? Blessed be the man who took notice of you!" Then Ruth told her mother-in-law about the one at whose place she had been working. "The name of the man I worked with today is Boaz." she said.

Psalm 41:1  Blessed are those who have regard for the weak; the LORD delivers them in times of trouble.

--a foreigner? 

Genesis 31:15  "Does he (Laban) not regard us (his daughters, Jacob's wives) as foreigners? Not only has he sold us, but he has used up what was paid for us."

Exodus 22:21  "Do not mistreat or oppress a foreigner, for you were foreigners in Egypt."

Leviticus 24:22  " 'You are to have the same law for the foreigner and the native born. I am the LORD  your God.' "

Deuteronomy 15:3  You may require payment from a foreigner, but you must cancel any debt your fellow Israelite owes you. (debts among Israelites were to be canceled at the end of every seventh year) 

Deuteronomy 23:20  You may charge a foreigner interest, but not a fellow Israelite, so that the LORD your God may bless you in everything you put your hand to in the land you are entering to possess.

Psalm 146:9  The LORD watches over the foreigner and sustains the fatherless and the widow, but he frustrates the ways of the wicked.
