Romans 3:13-18 Part 3 of 4

"Their throats are open graves; their tongues practice deceit."  "The poison of vipers is on their lips."  "Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness."  "Their feet are swift to shed blood; ruin and misery mark their ways, and the way of peace they do not know."  "There is no fear of God before their eyes."

Psalm 10:7  His mouth is full of lies and threats; trouble and evil are under his tongue.

Psalm 73:8  They scoff, and speak with malice; with arrogance they threaten oppression. 

Job 20:12-14  "Though evil is sweet in his mouth and he hides it under his tongue, though he cannot bear to let it go and lets it linger in his mouth, yet his food will turn sour in his stomach; it will become the venom of serpents within him."

and the way of peace they do not know 

Isaiah 59:7-8  Their feet rush into sin; they are swift to shed innocent blood. They pursue evil schemes; acts of violence mark their ways. The way of peace they do not know; there is no justice in their paths. They have turned them into crooked roads; no one who walks along them will know peace.

Isaiah 57:21  "There is no peace," says my God, "for the wicked."

1 Thessalonians 5:3  While people are saying, "Peace and safety," sudden destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.

Psalm 140:3  They make their tongues as sharp as a serpent's; the poison of vipers is on their lips.

Psalm 58:3-5  Even from birth the wicked go astray; from the womb they are wayward, spreading lies. Their venom is like the venom of a snake, like that of a cobra that has stopped its ears, that will not heed the tune of the charmer, however skillful the enchanter may be.

James 3:7-8  All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures are being tamed and have been tamed by mankind, but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.

Psalm 5:9  Not a word from their mouth can be trusted; their heart is filled with malice. Their throat is an open grave; with their tongues they tell lies.

Jeremiah 5:15-16  "People of Israel." declares the LORD, "I am bringing a distant nation against you--an ancient and enduring nation, a people whose language you do not know, whose speech you do not understand. Their quivers are like an open grave; all of them are mighty warriors."

Luke 11:44  "Woe to you, because you are like unmarked graves, which people will walk over without knowing it."

Psalm 12:2  Everyone lies to their neighbor; they flatter with their lips but harbor deception in their hearts.

Psalm 28:3  Do not drag me away with the wicked, with those who do evil, who speak cordially with their neighbors but harbor malice in their hearts.

Psalm 36:3  The words of their mouths are wicked and deceitful; they fail to act wisely or do good.

Proverbs 15:4  The soothing tongue is a tree of life, but a perverse tongue crushes the spirit.

Jeremiah 9:8  "Their tongue is a deadly arrow; it speaks deceitfully. With their mouths they all speak cordially to their neighbors, but in their hearts they set traps for them."

What shall we conclude then? Do we have any advantage? Not at all! For we have already made the charge that Jews and Gentiles alike are all under the power of sin. As it is written: "There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God. All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one."

Psalm 14:1-3 The fool says in his heart, "There is no God." They are corrupt, their deeds are vile; there is no one who does good. The LORD looks down from heaven on all mankind to see if there are any who understand, any who seek God. All have turned away, all have become corrupt; there is no one who does good, not even one. Ecclesiastes 7:20  Indeed, there is no one on earth who is righteous, no one who does what is right and never sins.

Proverbs 20:9  Who can say, "I have kept my heart pure; I am clean and without sin"? 

Job 15:14  "What are mortals that they could be pure, or those born of woman, that they could be righteous?"

1 John 1:8  If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.

Jeremiah 2:35  "...you say, 'I am innocent; he is not angry with me.' But I will pass judgment on you because you say, 'I have not sinned.' "

James 3:2  We all stumble in many ways. Anyone who is never at fault in what they say is perfect, able to keep their whole body in check.

Romans 3:9-12

Romans 3:1  What advantage, then, is there in being a Jew, or what value is there in circumcision?

Romans 3:19  Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God.

Romans 3:22b-23  There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, ...

But if our unrighteousness brings out God's righteousness more clearly, what shall we say? That God is unjust in bringing his wrath on us? (I am using a human argument.) Certainly not! If that were so, how could God judge the world? Someone might argue, "If my falsehood enhances God's truthfulness and so increases his glory, why am I condemned as a sinner?" Why not say--as some slanderously claim that we say--"Let us do evil that good may result"? Their condemnation is just!

Romans 3:4  Not at all! Let God be true, and every human being a liar. As it is written: "So that you may be proved right when you speak and prevail when you judge." [Psalm 51:4]

 

why am I condemned as a sinner? 

Romans 9:18-19  Therefore God has mercy on whom he wants to have mercy, and he hardens whom he wants to harden. One of you will say to me: "Then why does God still blame us? For who is able to resist his will?" 

Why not say--as some slanderously claim that we say--"Let us do evil that good may result"? 

Romans 6:1-2  What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?

Romans 6:15  What then? Shall we sin because we are not under the law but under grace? By no means!

Romans 5:8  But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

John 3:16  For God so loved the world, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

John 15:13  "Greater love has no one that this: to lay down one's life for one's friends."

1 Peter 3:18  For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit. 

1 John 3:16  This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. 

1 John 4:10  This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.

Romans 6:19  I am using an example from everyday life because of your human limitations. Just as you used to offer yourselves as slaves to impurity and to ever-increasing wickedness, so now offer yourselves as slaves to righteousness leading to holiness. 

Galatians 3:15  Brothers and sisters, let me take an example from everyday life. Just as no one can set aside or add to a human covenant that has been duly established, so it is in this case. 

 

Certainly not! If that were so, how could God judge the world? 

Genesis 18:25  "Far be it from you to do such a thing--to kill the righteous with the wicked, treating the righteous and the wicked alike. Far be it from you! Will not the Judge of all the earth do right?" 

Romans 2:16  This will take place on the day when God judges people's secrets through Jesus Christ, as my gospel declares.
