1 Peter 5:8-9 Part 2 of 2

Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.  

Resist him 
James 4:7  Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
Ephesians 4:27  ... and do not give the devil a foothold.
Ephesians 6:11  Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. 

standing firm in the faith 
Colossians 2:5  For though I am absent from you in body, I am present with you in spirit and delight to see how disciplined you are and how firm your faith in Christ is. 

because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings 
Acts 14:21b-22  Then they returned to Lystra, Iconium and Antioch, strengthening the disciples and encouraging them to remain true to the faith. "We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God," they said. 
Acts 5:41  The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name. 
Romans 5:3-5  Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us. 
Romans 8:18-19  I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed.

Be alert and of sober mind 
Galatians 5:22-23  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
1 Thessalonians 5:6  So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be awake and sober.
1 Peter 4:7  The end of all things is near. Therefore be alert and of sober mind so that you may pray.

Your enemy the devil prowls around 
Job 1:6-7  One day the angels came to present themselves before the LORD and Satan also came with them. The LORD said to Satan, "Where have you come from?" Satan answered the LORD, "From roaming throughout the earth, going back and forth on it."

like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour 
2 Timothy 4:17  But the Lord stood at my side and gave me strength, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. And I was delivered from the lion's mouth.

1 Peter 5:5-7

In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, "God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble." Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

Ephesians 5:21  Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.

clothe yourselves with humility toward one another 
1 Peter 3:8  Finally, all of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble.

"God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble." 
Proverbs 3:34  He mocks proud mockers but shows favor to the humble and oppressed.
Matthew 23:12  "For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted."

Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time 
Job 5:11  "The lowly he sets on high, and those who mourn are lifted to safety." 
James 4:10  Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.

Cast all your anxiety on him 
Psalm 37:5-6  Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him and he will do this: He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn, your vindication like the noonday sun.
Matthew 6:25  "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?"

because he cares for you 
Psalm 55:22  Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.
Hebrews 13:5  Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, "Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you."
Deuteronomy 31:6  "Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you."

To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder and a witness of Christ's sufferings who also will share in the glory to be revealed: Be shepherds of God's flock that is under your care, watching over them--not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.  

not lording it over those entrusted to you 
Ezekiel 34:4  " 'You have not strengthened the weak or healed the sick or bound up the injured. You have not brought back the strays or searched for the lost. You have ruled them harshly and brutally.' "
Matthew 20:25-28  Jesus called them together and said, "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave--just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." 

but being examples to the flock 
1 Timothy 4:12  Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity. 

And when the Chief Shepherd appears 
John 10:14-15  "I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me--just as the Father knows me and I know the Father--and I lay down my life for the sheep." 

you will receive the crown of glory 
1 Corinthians 9:25  Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.

that will never fade away 
1 Peter 1:3-4  Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. Luke 24:46-48  He told them, "This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all the nations, beginning at Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things."

who also will share in the glory to be revealed 
1 Peter 1:4b-5  This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God's power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.
1 Peter 1:7  These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith--of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire--may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.
1 Peter 4:13  But rejoice inasmuch as you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed.

1 Peter 4:17-19

For it is time for judgment to begin with God's household; and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who do not obey the gospel of God? And, "If it is hard for the righteous to be saved, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?" So then, those who suffer according to God's will should commit themselves to their faithful Creator and continue to do good.

Jeremiah 25:29  " 'See, I am beginning to bring disaster on the city that bears my Name, and will you indeed go unpunished? You will not go unpunished, for I am calling down a sword on all who live on the earth, declares the LORD Almighty.' "

and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who do not obey the gospel of God? 
2 Thessalonians 1:8  He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.

If it is hard for the righteous to be saved, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner? 
Proverbs 11:31  If the righteous receive their due on earth, how much more the ungodly and the sinner!
Luke 23:31  "For if people do these things when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?"

those who suffer according to God's will should commit themselves to their faithful Creator and continue to do good 
1 Peter 2:15  For it is God's will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish people.
1 Peter 3:17  For it is better, if it is God's will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil.
